Goodbye 2021. Worst year of my life no doubt, but I'm a better and tougher person for it.

Welcome 2022. I have a feeling you may not be so putrid. Though I've got to say, the bar has been set pathetically low...

Cheers y'all, whishing every single one of you happiness and good health this year. As for January.... it's coming. ;)

6z same progression as previous runs. After day 7 big ridge develops over us. Inversions strengthens, low level cold pool develops and intensifies quickly with big time east winds.

It's almost a carbon copy of what happened in January 2013. Clipper with a shot of cold air, and then the inversion.

La Grande hit -18? No way!

image.png

As far as I can tell looking at their current station and the defunct station that went 1948-1965, it is tied with 12/23/1983 as the 2nd coldest temp in the 1948-present period of record, and within reach of the -20 from January 1950. You have to remember that area is very windy and they almost never decouple, which is why their record lows are so mild when compared to Baker City.

6*F Hit here at BLI for a moment before jumping up to 19*. Coldest low of the snap. Impressive streak of temps here.
From 12/25-12-31 BLI averaged 24.3* high and 12.1* low with stand out lows of 9,7 and 6*f. Puke on them for not measuring snow. I think they probably would have totaled around 16” at the airport. Parents place near Lake Whatcom had 20” total.

Good morning and happy new year!  Love that 2021 ended and 2022 started with so much beautiful snow on the ground.  Hopefully it is a hint of good times ahead.  We had a low of 19 this morning and now up to 21.

Klamath Falls had -1 this morning, first time in 2 years they hit below zero. Last winter the minimum was 8. lol

The record is -10 for January 1st in 2016 though (old record -3 in 1988).

Welcome to the wonderful world of ice dams!

I wonder if we went with a metal roof and pumped in a little more insulation if that would eliminate this ice damming issue. Well I’m about to go out now that it’s getting light enough and start chipping away at the ice.

Next time you visit some place like Roslyn or Leavenworth, pay attention to the roofing materials. Typically metal. Snow and ice tend to naturally slide off before they build up to ridiculous levels.

Biggest problem with metal on the West Side is that falling branches tend to poke holes in it.

A less expensive option might be to check out Gutter Helmet.  Not sure if this would address your exact problem but it looks like it will reduce the chance of ice damming to me.

23f and a nice sunrise.  Looks like we best enjoy the sun and cold today as it looks pretty wet and more normal temps most of the week here.  Rivers are going to blow so no steelhead fishing to start the New Years.  Clackamas R at 12' headed to over 16'.  Sandy River at 9' headed to probably over 12' and I think those are conservative values.  Will depend on where the FL ends up.  These aren't flood stage levels but they're gonna pop pretty good.  Just glad it's not an AR.  Lot of low and mid level snow.

Many places here in Leavenworth have snow guards to prevent sliding and protect the roof.  It also prevents enormous piles of snow from accumulating underneath, which can pile so high that it reaches the underneath of the roof and takes forever to melt in the spring.

Our building codes require that roofs can handle large snow loads so no worries that the roof can collapse.

It also is more asthetically pleasing.

First is a house with a metal roof where the snow slides, illustrating my point about how it piles up. And note another slide was imminent when I took the picture.  Not my house, I work at that house but don't live there.

Next 2 are my house.  Different kind of guards over my garage than the house they were installed at different times.

My low was 10.7 and it occurred at 12:30am.  High clouds moved in, otherwise I'm sure I would have been near 5 degrees or possibly lower.  Currently 21.5, calm and cloudy.  I loved the weather this past year, with the exception of late June, but the year itself was the worst ever for me and I thought having a worse year than 2020 would be impossible.  I pray this year will be a great blessing to all of us.

Happy New Year everyone! What are everyone's thoughts on scouring out the cold air? Models and mets seem (mostly) insistent that we will be well above freezing when precip arrives, but that seems dicey at best to me, especially given my anecdotal experiences in the past. Thoughts?
