Midwest & Great Lakes November 20-21st Snowstorm

Where is all the moisture coming from? How the heck does Sioux Falls get those totals?!

I was wondering that myself. We all just had a strong system blow through midweek. I thought it went all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico where it would have wiped out the moisture return. This system moved in off of the Pacific and of course usually theses systems get their moisture rung out over the Rockies so it has been surprising indeed.

Hey guys, it has been a long time since I have posted. I always tell myself I'm going to keep on posting even when it isn't winter, but that never ends up working out. I still track the weather all year around, but I guess a snowstorm is really what gets me excited to post on these forums again. I started my freshman year at Iowa State as a Meteorology major and it's going really well so far. I'm taking a few Meteorology courses along side with math and physics. It hasn't been an easy year so far, but I'm loving it and my passion for the weather gets me through it. I'm back in the Chicago area for thanksgiving break and I'm happy I was able to get home before the storm really got going. I'm enjoying the storm so far and in the end this will be a historic November snowstorm we will all remember for a long time. I just measured 6.2 inches just now and nearly 3 of those came in one hour! With up to 16 hours of snow left I wouldnt be surprised if many areas get over a foot of snow in northern illinois. With Winnebago already nearly at a foot I wouldn't be surprised to see them hit 18 inches!

I know in 2000 Omaha and most of Nebraska had a snowy winter, especially December. I guess your area has been in a weird location lately. Your location is prime, geographically speaking for big snows. Air masses from the north and south clash over the state for heaven's sake!

Move out here and you will quickly realize we are not in a prime location for snow.  We rarely see a snowstorm drop more than 7-10 inches even in the middle of winter.  It has been simply depressing for all snow lovers in this state for years on end.  Our average snow amount for any given winter is around 26 inches.  Lately we haven't even been getting close to that.

Welcome back buddy!  I was thinking about you earlier when I commented about that heavy band sitting right over your area.  Glad you popped in.  Good luck with school and your future endeavors.

Ugh. I can't do it. Omaha sucks. I've lived here 5 years and I think the most snow I've seen at a time is 6 or 7 inches....

I don't think that we're in that great of a spot really. There's a reason why we only average like 24-26" of snow per year. We're far enough south that sometimes we're too warm with really strong systems and end up on the warm side of the system and other times the moisture flow off of the Gulf is best just to the east of us so the heavier snow and precip falls east of us. Just my opinion

Measured 10.0" in Hawthorn Woods at 11:10pm.

1.5" at 8:30.

8.0" at 10:00.

Those were some incredible snowfall rates while parked under that heavy band! I arrived home just before that first measurement and it was already heavy and very disorienting to drive with so many big reflective flakes.

Those are unprecedented snowfall rates!  Similar to what Bufallo, NY had during their epic Lake Effect snow storm last November that lasted days.

I guess what I was getting at was, your area should see a double digit storm more often than once every 5+ years. Seems like Sioux Falls, Des Moines, and places in the western part of your state do well at least once a winter.

Well I hope a SW flow of storms can change that sub 10" storm drought this winter for you.

Welcome back! Nice to have another northern burbs person back on the board.

33° at the Crib and 36° mid lake buoy. Lake influence is really minimal.

Impacts are only being felt in NW Indiana/east side of Chicago right now.

Being in Nebraska watching this unfold time and time again is like having that ex-girlfriend (chicago) that keeps having good stuff happen to her.

Yeah, we'll "congratulate" and "be happy" for you all, but low-key we're jealous of you and just end up burying our feelings afterwords and continue to struggle as our depressing situation remains the same.

3.5 inches in my yard as of a half hour ago, so the accumulation has been rather slow.  We likely won't come anywhere near what DVN was forecasting.

season snowfall: 34.8"

'22-23: 30.2"      '21-22: 27.1"      '20-21: 52.5"      '19-20: 36.2"      '18-19: 50.2"      '17-18: 39.5"

Average snowfall: ~30"

Last measurement until morning: 7.0" so far.

Trees are caked with snow as everything else is too.

Well its now just after 8 AM and here at my house the temp is now 32° and there is light snow falling and the total on the ground......drum roll please.....a trace!  At this time looks like most of the snow so far has fallen to the south and SE of Grand Rapids. There are reports of 1 to 2” to the south of here. Will have to see what happens later toay.

This storm is hard to measure. Lots of compacting and melting. On the grass there's around 6". Pavement around 4". I've been measuring from my snowboard and clearing it every couple of hours to avoid the compaction and melting. Total so far is 9.5". Still coming down.

Getting in on the Lake enhanced snow here. Everything is buried in snow big time. No real slop to be seen.

Measure in a little bit. Guessing there is a double digit total now.
