December 2016 Observations and Model Discussion for the Pacific Northwest

The overwhelming theme is to spin up a low out over the ocean and then kick it back in over us in the day 9 to day 10 time frame. All models agree on this and there is brutally cold air in BC to tap into when the trough kicks back over us.

Oh yes...the ECMWF drop 850s to -13 at hour 48.

I have no idea how people can ruin the fun when we are going to have snow within 24 hours followed by an Arctic outbreak. I was hoping to come on here and have fun today.

Larger scale Jim... Not the next 3 to 4 mostly dry days...  Sure it will be cold for a few but the whole epicness of it has gone to the crapper...  Again, there will be very little snow for many up here. I hope you score though!! You deserve it.

Yep it might warm up for one day then get cold again. As soon as low pressure goes east we get into cold backwash. To many people on the forum have no clue of the potential we have in this pattern.

We come from the land of the ice and snow.

Even southern B.C. gets taken out of the game on some of these runs for the transition.

We better enjoy our dusting and possible 3 days off chilly weather.

Remember 12 hours ago when February 2014 was still being talked about as a possible worst case scenario?

Some of our biggest weenies already have a road trip planned to Prince George: "Where All Your Weenie Dreams Come True".

I am on my way to meet Jesse and Dewey at Vancouver Mall to get the road trip started. Cold anomalies for days!

Light snow is falling in the Fairwood area just east of Renton. I just left the gym there and it's legit snow - a pleasant surprise. Around 400 ft elevation - radar isn't picking it up. Nearest station showing temp of 32 with dp of 30: https://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=pws:KWARENTO85

I don't think my area will come close to the forecasted high of 40 today- maybe won't get out of the mid-30s.

Wunderground now saying much more snow here over the next week with lows in the teens.

Oh forgot to mention last night I had about 0.10" of snow. It stopped by around 8pm and cleared.

Not for Portland.

No... only 42 and raining down there next Sunday on the 12Z ECMWF.   Much better.   :)

Then crashing down to 41 and raining on Monday.   Lows in the upper 30s will feel chilly though!

The GFS ensemble is clearly showing another cold shot around the 11th now. A mean of -8. Pretty similar to the ECMWF ensemble on the 0z. I bet the 12z ECMWF ensemble shows the same. Not that anyone will pay attention to this anyway, because I know the sky is falling.

Well...I'm done on here today.  I'm going to enjoy my snow tonight and will be back tomorrow.  Just not worth putting up with all the negativity.

Some nice mid to upper 40s with rain being shown for Seattle on the 12Z ECMWF for next weekend!

Spring?

I did see a hummingbird this morning. I always though they were a summer thing?

Looks cold and dry this week, could be worse. Just a little annoying that we likely won't get that January monkey off our backs.
