PNW December 2022 - Part II

The Pacific Ocean and a lot more terrain.

It still blows my mind that it's all it takes to make our PNW weather so complex. The Southeast has a warmer Gulf of Mexico to deal with compared to our Pacific, yet even New Orleans and North Florida gets in on the fun with freezing temps. Even that one year with the freak Texas cold snap, Houston was in the single digits if I recall right.

Just the things that make weather/climate insanely interesting. And sometimes frustrating.

I have a feeling we will see a period of flooding after this for northern areas and then another flash freeze on top of floodwaters and at some point later, an ARKstorm raging from across the entire Pacific into the Central Valley of California, with Arctic air sagging back south over us in January.

This is factually inaccurate. Pretty much everyone in the I-5 corridor of Oregon had lows in the 10-15 range in January 2017.

Hopefully they change this.

🇨🇦 My fellow Canadian neighbors... I am coming to a realization... and please let me know if I am wrong.... but your local news websites absolutely stink if you want weather information.  I have been using CTV Vancouver, CBC BC, and CBC Vancouver / Victoria, Global BC, Citytv, and... like... beyond just a 7 day forecast, there is next to nothing about weather.  Most don't even show radar or have write-ups.  One did have a radar, but it looks like it came from 1985.  Most websites don't even have a weather tab or just hide it as a small single line with the current temp. Am I just not looking at the right local news stations, or does the local weather reports (at least online) really stink that badly?

Don't trust infotainment providers to fulfill your weather geek needs. They make bite-size infotainment segments intended for digestion by normies.

Right? Some places in the south valley got down into the teens back in November too, which is the coldest temp we've had so far in the regular season back on Nov 19.

Sounds like a total bummer.  They must think snow in Canada is too ubiquitous to be worth mentioning.

But those are their local tv news providers... where else do you look (I know of the newspapers too, but they stink equally bad for weather).  Don't people in BC want good weather reports when they turn on the 9 o'clock news?  Is this why such a large portion of people actually watch Seattle's local news in Vancouver?  lol

That, and they are trained to be very vanilla.  Even some of the good ones (Mark Nelsen, etc.), have to tone it down because being very wrong and causing worry can ruin his or her's career.  They really do have to walk a fine line because the uninformed, shall I say stupid, masses will run amok.

Quick question.

Is there a place where I can get all the historical daily snowfall data for Winthrop and download in .csv form?

I'm familiar with this site

https://www.weather.gov/wrh/climate?wfo=otx

But the best filter there was maximum daily snowfall by calendar day / month.  So if the same day had huge snowfall in different years it only shows the year with the highest.

Maybe I'm just running the report incorrectly.

Looks like January 21st, 1935 is the highest day ever at 52 inches. Hard to actually believe that's accurate.  Higher than any days in Mazama, but Mazama maybe didn't have a weather station in 1935

https://xmacis.rcc-acis.org/

I think thats the best bet. Takes a little playing around to figure out which type of data series/query you need to show what you want but it basically has everything.

We've mostly had a very fine freezing mist/drizzle all afternoon, but in the last hour it has definitely switched to dry snow. Oh, how I hope we get a bit of whatever is heading down from up north! ❄️

The freezing drizzle thing was really weird.  The entire column is cold and yet we had that too.

That is so true. It may have been Scott Sistek, I don't remember, but someone who worked for a local news outfit told me it's a super fine line because if they get people too hyped up about snow, they go crazy, go buy out the grocery stores, and cause panic... but if they don't get people hyped up enough, people get stuck on I-5, abandon their cars, get into accidents, and worse. Either way, the mets get blamed.

And then small media markets have pro mets generally seem to move up pretty quick, so we are kind of a farm system. (which is nice to see as they generally do a solid job)

It was definitely weird to be outside "freezing my baguettes off", crunchy iced-over snow underfoot, and have whatever was landing on me not be fully frozen. Bizarre. If nothing else, this has been a truly bizarre event. Lived in the PNW my whole live and never seen anything quite like it.

Can't remember which one, maybe KIRO7, but they turned their weather segments into a fast 60 second segment with the Met trying to break it down as fast as they can. Made me really sad because normies probably tuned out or slept through the more in-depth analysis (that was still intended for basic understanding) with the maps and low/high pressures, or they only cared about how the meteorologist looked.
