wx_statman
I like how Mark will point out when the NWS or other PDX area mets are being ridiculous. He has some well remembered whiffs like 12/29/09, but overall he is the best TV met in Portland and its not even close. I don't mind Zaffino, he is pretty good, but not as good as Mark. Agreed. I'll listen to Mark before anyone else. There's something about growing up a weather weenie here, as he did, that you can't replicate no matter how much technical education you receive. Phil
Very unlikely. They are tough. I know in MN they can bloom and then it can get down to the single digits and they still keep blooming when it warms up again. They are hilariously hardly, almost on par with the toughest invasive weed species in that regard. Ours started sprouting up in January, and have survived multiple single digit lows since then. They also survived subzero temperatures back in March of 2014, when they were close to blooming. So yeah, I’m not certain they can actually be killed by cold, unless it’s like -15*F or something. Phil
Yeah, that's a good example. January is what blows up most of the old analogs. I'm not seeing much in the way of -ENSO progressions that featured blockiness/dry weather in December, followed by a January torch, followed by February action prior to the modern era. In recent decades, 1989-90, 2005-06 & this winter have pulled it off. I think January used to find a way to be cooler in the old days even under similar forcings, which is not surprising considering the background climate was cooler. The seasonality of the Indo-Pacific ITCZ/MJO and BDC/NAM is vastly different now, for a number of potential reasons. I don’t think the “cooler background climate” alone can sufficiently explain the recent midwinter woes across western North America. IMO, it’s much more nonlinear and temperamental than that.
