PNW February 2023 Weather Discussion - Meteorological winter finale

So I’ll be moving soon — what are the best places for snow on the west side of the mountains no more than a ~35 minute drive from Seattle? Rent has to be under 3500 if we have any real estate moguls in this community but I don’t think that will be a limitation.

Enumclaw is nice (Gateway to Mount Rainier). You get some good windstorms too!

North bend seems promising but there aren’t many places up that way. Would Black Diamond or Maple Valley be better than say, Tacoma?

Black Diamond wouldn’t be bad, or even moving up further north towards where the convergence zone sets up more frequently..like shoreline Lynwood or mill creek. The amount of time to get to Seattle though can always be bad with traffic of course.

I live in Ravensdale. Not far from Maple Valley. We usually get more snow in marginal setups.  Much better than Tacoma and Seattle and only 10-15 mins from the mountains.

Most of this area is between 500-800 feet elevation.  Duvall, North Bend and Enumclaw also good if you want to stay in King County.

Many times I have seen it snow here when the I-5 corridor gets nothing.

I will say properties are getting very expensive out this way and there are not many rental properties.

Sitting here wondering the same Andrew. Seems like we could be setting up for a mid level cloud fest tonight.

Great, potential lows in the low 20s, oh wait no just kidding, enjoy the mid 30s!

Yeah places around Everett and Lynnwood with some elevation will typically do quite well.

Looks like a lot of folks in OR did alright last night.

I'm pretty happy with this for an opening salvo.  An inch of snow which totally froze up with icy roads this morning.  Now it magically cleared out just as the sun was going down.  41/29 so far today with some snow still left.

I didn't realize Mazama was larger than Tambora.  I thought they were about the same.  Makes me wonder what kind of eruption Ranier could be capable of.

Lived in Maple Valley for 11 years. Definitely better than Tacoma during marginal situations but the east wind can eat the snow during more widespread snow events.

My guess is you’ll have better luck living in the convergence zone.

The 12z GFS was pretty epic today.  Much like the 0z GEM and 0z ECMWF.  Huge potential coming up.

The 0z and 12z EPS both showed PNA dropping to -4 or a tad lower.

This area is great for cold mins and keeping snow around in some cases.  Places closer to the Sound can lose snow like magic once the south winds begin.

Yea Feb 2019 was a good example of that. Northern Maple Valley and Ravensdale had snow on the ground for over a month. There was also quite a bit of snow with that.

I had quite a bit less snow than some places closer to the Sound with the last snow event in 2019 and yet my snow cover held on longer.

Huh? Tell me you aren't really doing that. Are you seriously comparing what I said to what Josh has said? or to say I was empowered or allowed to do so because Josh was given such a long leash. That's just dumb. There are some overly sensitive people here who choose to be offended unable to properly manage your feelings or emotions, but if you listen to chick music, that's not surprising. You made the choice to be offended and type this ridiculous comment. Remember that. You made the choice.

Depends what you like I suppose. For me it’s about watching snow accumulate, not about how long it sticks around after the cold spell is over. Cold mins and stats aren’t really important to me.

It’s really too bad that we didn’t get major arctic blasts the last couple years or huge snowstorms. More of them at least. That worm is gonna turn from us cold in the west to cold in the east in the winters upcoming. Probably the last of the “snowy” winters here for a few years. Just a gut feeling though.

When the IPWP extends again that’ll happen. Usually occurs around solar maximum so could be 2 years away.

I can't help but feel entirely responsible. Fred is mostly absent and Phil/Hawks12 hardly engage with the western forum at all...neither of them live in the PNW. It was me who could have done something early on and chose not to, hoping just letting it go would work.

It was a weak decision made by lazy intentions. I haven't been all that present lately due to my own personal matters, but that shouldn't culminate in one of our own members leaving because they feel grossed out and uncomfortable. That's my bad..my fault. It never should have come to that point.

It is Lynnwood.  Lynwood is in California, and that would be an awful commute to Seattle. 😜

There is also a Lynwood Center (one N) on Bainbridge Island. Being right on the shore, it doesn’t get much snow.

It's called clown range for a reason.

Clearview is about the best I think.  A little more east and pretty good elevation.

It’s not within 35 minutes of Seattle in weekday traffic, though. Not unless your car is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and you can press a button and engage flying mode.

I was going to suggest somewhere near Cougar Mountain in Bellevue or Newcastle. There are residential streets over 1,000' elevation. Tends to be a pricey area, though.
