PNW February 2023 Weather Discussion - Meteorological winter finale

Recommended Posts

A couple of fun obs. First one is a few miles away as the crow flies and a couple of ridges over and similar elevation. . Second is just east of here on the ridge above the Molalla River.

Wind has backed off here and it is down to 16.

GFS wants to move the ridge over us and flatten it in the long range… I think the CFS did this a few days ago and then retrograded it mid month for a March 1896 redux.

9.5 - 14.6 inches in Tillamook. What the hell. Ridiculous.

Also 13 inches in St Helens but @BLI snowmanin Ridgefield had quite a bit less I think and the distance between those two isn't much.

Yeah that's nuts. Had about a 4" storm total here with the depth peaking around 3.3".

I would love to see PDX hit at 24 by midnight to tie their record low. Dewpoints and sky cover are great from Corvallis north, we just have a little too much mixing right now.

Looking for some advice from you kind folks. We're pretty new to the area and want to make the drive out to Leavenworth this weekend. Do you guys think I-90 will be passable with a Subaru Outback with snow tires? Don't wanna take any serious risks, but also don't wanna cancel for nothing. We were thinking of leaving around noon as the snow tapers off, but it looks like at least a foot will have fallen over the pass overnight.

ABSOLUTELY  you will be good.  Be careful on blewett pass. I've done that drive about 200 times and blewett can be really icy.

I'm in St. Helens and we never had close to that on the ground at once (more like 5"). We started with about an inch Wednesday morning and it snowed most of the day with little additional accumulation until after dark (temps around 33/34 degrees during daylight hours). So maybe they're counting the snow that fell rather than snow cover.

It's also possible they were measuring from a location in the hills, rather than down near the rive where I live.

This is OT but I’m observing some of the craziest thermal contrasts I’ve ever seen here.

We decoupled and dropped from 80°F to 54°F fairly quick after sunset, but winds aloft are increasing and starting to mix back down to the surface.

The sensor at the SW end of the property is currently reading 71°F, while the one on the NE end (which is only ~200ft away and 50ft lower in elevation) is 56°F!!

I walked between the two and it’s crazy, hot spots, cold spots, etc. You can feel how much warmer the puffs of wind are compared to the antecedent air. This has happened before but never to this extent.

Weather definitely is fascinating.

Agree. Just be flexible on timing if they’re super worried. Blewett is the worst. Stevens can sometimes be a better option depending on the situation. In the summer I take stevens often it’s such a more enjoyable drive and only one summit, though it’s about 15-20 min longer than if I went 97/90.

The GEM looks chilly, and it sends the bulk of next weekends trough into the Great Basin. Looks like an all timer.

Lots of potential next week but could also be a very tortuous week with lots of low to mid thirties rain/snow mix with nothing to show. In the end excited for the fun weather watching.

Dew Points remain below freezing the majority of the time. Your missing that
