March 2019 Observations and Discussion

Recommended Posts

The temp over the snow field has continued to struggle a bit today.  The CR airport is still only 48.  The NWS went from 56 to 53 and now "steady around 50".

I don't think we'll be able to melt all the snow by late tomorrow.  The open areas are becoming grassy, but there is still quite a bit of snow/ice in the yards.

season snowfall: 34.8"

'22-23: 30.2"      '21-22: 27.1"      '20-21: 52.5"      '19-20: 36.2"      '18-19: 50.2"      '17-18: 39.5"

No rain today. Bust in this forecast. Man, those meteorologists would be so lost if there were not any computer models. These guys are totally useless.

Anyways, looking forward to some severe weather tomorrow. Hopefully, there will be some.

Not my problem. I wish I knew if they were serious or not. They are useless.

Exactly. I never did trust them though. More accuracy comes from this board.

Yikes. I expect meteorologist bashing on social media, but I thought I’d be clear of that on here.

I usually try to not criticize mets so long as their forecasts are reasonable. If they consistently make no sense, or they are pretentious, then I'll usually start going after them. For example, one met here consistently forecasted amounts way too low then got pissy when people dared question him. I believe he forecasted 2-4" the day before the blizzard when every other met had 6-10".

Incredible day in Anchorage today. The weather in town was mild. About 37°. And there’s not much snow cover in town but when you head just southeast of town there is considerable snow cover. We went on top of Mt. Alyeska today and while we were up there blizzard conditions developed. It was very cool. We actually got stuck up there for about a hour and a half as we had to wait for it to be safe to take the tram back down the mountain. They are expecting 2 feet tonight into tomorrow in that region. But just a little ways away in Anchorage skies are partly cloudy. It was an amazing first day in Alaska. This place is beautiful. I’ll try to post some pics.

The new euro is fantastic next week.  We have to put up with chilly low 40s through the weekend, but this morning's run has moved the low 50s up to Tuesday and many in the region approach 70 by Friday/Saturday.

The farther west you live, the better.  We get the flow off the plains and don't have to deal with the cold lakes.  The 12z euro even gets interior lower Michigan into the 60s by Fri/Sat, though.

Yep...A better warming trend starts the middle of next week. It's also going to be nice to start drying out the mud with a dryer pattern for now. I like storms and heavy rain, but let's take care of the extreme sogginess first. Terry Swailes' latest article yesterday was an interesting read. One map he posted showed a torch for mid April when 80s are a possibility, though that's not that unusual by then.

I wonder what the last year was in which we did not receive any measurable snowfall after February.  My records go back to 2008 and there are no years during that period.

The Northwoods is not the only place in the lower 48 with a massive snow depth....check out this pic outside the NWS office in Caribou, Maine! That's a 4ft snow depth...quite a glacier to say the least.

We headed out to BC for dinner about 6 and just caught the western edge which was bad enough. Not much T&L but plenty of +RN and heavy winds driving it sideways. Localized puddles in fields and plenty of road ponding was fun. Just minor tree debri too. Apparently just east towards Jackson TOR sirens went off have yet to check on any real reports tho.

Edit - reports are various from FLOOD to winds to HAIL.

Glad I missed this one about 20 mi north of Marshall:

0605 PM HAIL 1 SSE CHARLOTTE 42.56N 84.82W

03/14/2019 M1.25 INCH EATON MI TRAINED SPOTTER

REPORTED AT 813 EAST SHAW ST, CHARLOTTE MI.

HAIL MEASURED FROM 1 INCH TO 1.25 INCH.

ESTIMATE TIME PERIOD WAS 6PM TO 6:05PM.

A weak tornado was also possible here, but nothing formed thankfully.

My own records show that I had no measurable snow after February in the years of 1990,1994 &.2015. I did have some sleet & freezing rain in March & April {trace) of 2015. Also noteworthy......1997 was a strange year with no snowfall in March, but had 8.5” in April & again 6” in October, & both of those were the highest snowfalls of my records since 1990 for April and October!! I need to update my chart as haven’t since 2012.

When I was checking out a US snowfall map lately I noticed parts of Maine had incredible snow depth. Neighbors that lived under a mile away years ago, had moved out to eastern Maine and still live there so they must not mind it to much.

Have some family friends that live in central Maine that where in town they had a solid 2.5 feet. My wife has a close friend up by the Canadian border and she said close to 5. They are worried about their cattle.

Over at Muskegon they had a record rain fall amount of 1.53″ For March their snow fall is 5.2″ and for the season they are now at 69.4″ and to the east Lansing reported 0.45″ of rain and their snow fall amounts are just 0.6″ for March and just 37.2″ reported for the season. Cloudy and blustery attm w temps in the 40s.

Btw: A strong cell passed on by last night my area and triggered some really hvy downpours and vivid lightning. Winds were gusty, but not damaging. To my NW, a tornado caused some damage. Luckily, no injuries or fatalities. I haven't checked, but I am pretty sure that there is standing water out there.

I am honestly pissed off right now. The national news has NOTHING about the flooding going on in Nebraska, it's absolutely absurd and a disgrace to their credibility. Last time I checked Nebraska was part of the United States, and their residents are also US Citizens. This is a disaster for several parts of the state, and yet, no word. It's ridiculous.
