July 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

If the earth spun the other way Portland would probably be a desert, and quite a bit hotter in the summer with much more frequent offshore flow/downsloping. Our summers are actually very representative of our latitude, winters however are not.

I was using climates like Hokkaido and Sakhalin as examples. Depends on what the ocean current would be, I'm assuming that it's a cold current like the Oyashio Current.

My weather knowledge is far more limited than most here, so there’s no point in gunking up the thread. Better to observe and learn (and eye roll occasionally).

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. There’s way creepier posts being made as we speak.

Very different and interesting summer thus far.  This bears no resemblence to recent summers and that will continue to be the case for a while longer.  The ENSO situation is quite interesting also.  It seems that tanked SOI and occasional WWBs over the tropical Pacific are having zero effect as surface and subsurface temperatures continue to drop.  It's pretty funny to see the mets on Weatherbell touting the low SOI, but failing to realize it's meaningless at this point.  I think there is simply no warm water left in the Western Pacific to keep a Nino going.  Probably looking neutral or weak Nina this winter.  The sun is in a very deep sleep right now.  In the last 50 days there have only been a few days with tiny spots that rapidly disappear.  The table is set for us this winter.

The fact that you’re hanging around during the summer bodes well.

I’m serious, I did research on the ice sheet in graduate school. I wasn’t on the summit, I was about 20 km inland from the margin. Yes it would technically only get to the high 50s to low 60s but the sun bouncing off the ice can create quite sweaty circumstances.

Sweet! There are probably only a few people on this planet that can claim that. I can't wait to see your pics.

With 0.23” and counting, were up to 0.42” total for the event and 0.53” for the month. We only had 0.52” in May and 0.17” in June. Been a nice stretch of cooler wetter weather.

Are you thinking simply “better than average winter” or full on 08-09 or 16-17?

Ended up with a high of 70F here, with some brief heavy showers passing through mid-afternoon. This is about as muggy as it gets in Victoria with the DP peaking at 65F earlier this evening. Still it's not enough humidity to be uncomfortable, would be nice to get this sort of weather more often in the summer months. Feels like summer in the UK.

Fukk it, how about 49-50 or 68-69? Something for everybody (not gonna happen).

Cool looking sky out there this evening. Sort of dark and brooding, makes for a unique feel when coupled with the humidity. 72 DP 62 currently.

You are so baked.

Nice looking early fall front on the 0z GFS for next week:

Hopefully it gives us another good dose of rain before August here down south. Got 0.42” this “storm”. I’m supposed to be headed to OR that night but rain would be cool.

Analogs from a solar perspective would be 1985-86, 1996-97, and 2008-09.  All had greatness at least for WA.

85-86 was a 10” winter for Portland and had a rare November snow event.

96-97 had almost no snow in Portland proper but was one of the best ski seasons on record IIRC.

08-09 is self explanatory.

The downtown Bellingham station picked up 0.35" in the past couple hours! Gorgeous :)

I've had the convergence zone over my house a decent chunk of the evening and closing on 1.5" for the day.  It absolutely poured from about 6:45-9pm, and cranked up again in the last 30 minutes.  I have not seen rain like this in a looong time!  Usually I am stuck at work  with no windows so all I can do is listen.  I am home today and its been fun to watch.

08-09 was decent down here. A few inches and a few really cold days before the slow warm-up. Salem north was way better tho.

Not sure how 85-86 was but 96-97 was a dud for the s valley.

1390 on my SAT and a 5 in AP English (meaning I don’t have to take it in college). I think that’s pretty darn okay considering how worried I was!
