We might get some convection here tonight but I really want rain esp since tomorrow will be breezy. Looks like the high will be cooler than expected here. NWS is thinking maybe 70 for my location and Lewiston less than 80.

I don't think there was much rain at either locations between July 1-September 30th last year.

SLE had 0.44" in that period last year.

SAC 0.28"

This is kind of insane. March was the 3rd coldest ever here in Oregon. Only 1917 and 1897 were colder. Statewide anomaly of -4.8F for the month.

The cold was definitely focused over Oregon. Washington ran a -1.8F anomaly, good for 32nd coldest March all time.

Nationally March was a little below normal.

It was the 5th coldest March in CA, NV, and ND.

Of course on the converse.

June-October was the warmest such 5 month period since 1895, and it wasn't even close, even with a relatively pedestrian June.

July: 4th warmest (2021 was 1.8F warmer and the warmest ever.

August: 1st all-time by about 1F

September: Tied with 2020 for warmest all time.

October: 2nd warmest all-time statewide.

Interestingly looking at precip over the years, we see a pretty noticeable upward trend in the spring months of March-May, and a declining trend in the fall and winter months, summer precip across Oregon has remained relatively stable since 1895, as it there is not generally much of it. Annual precip has been pretty stable overall, though there has not been an extremely wet year since 2012.

Such nice trends on the long range 12z GEFS. In my book whenever we can extend a cool and wet pattern into the late April window and beyond(???) it’s a huge win these days. There is a definite seasonal shift that can happen after mid April in some recent years

whatever delays and/or diminishes smoke season I'm all for

If you look at seasonal warming since the late 1800s, spring has warmed the least in Oregon (About 2F), winter and summer have warmed about 1F more over that period, with fall in between.

January has clearly warmed the most of any month. April has seen almost negligible warming over the past Century.

No doubt. But that's traditional PNW summer, which has always been quite dry in Salem. Whereas Sacramento often starts really drying out in April. As recently as 2021 they nearly had a rainless April.

So while summer has definitely gone from very dry to extremely dry lately in the PNW, any trend towards a longer dry season has been much less pronounced.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we wait until May for our first 70 this year.

It’s April 10th. Waiting until May would mean record late territory. Doesn’t take much for us to hit it by late April, even a short break in troughing with some brief offshore flow would do it.
