April 2020 Weather discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

I will say, even though this troughy pattern hasn’t been memorable at all at the surface compared to what was progged at points (at least for down here), I am very grateful it got mountain snowpack up to average right at the start of ablation season.

In the foothills it has been somewhat notable. Dustings of snow March 31-April 2. SLE with -6 and -7 departures the past two days and a sub-freezing low this morning.

Have you hit 60 yet this year? Our high for the year so far is 66.

I think 59 has been my warmest day so far.

Currently 38 degrees!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Sure, but the early 1950s and mid-1930s comparisons being thrown around are looking pretty silly in retrospect. It hasn't even gotten below 37 here.

Oh yeah. I think only one person was doing that. It is a chilly early April trough, very similar to early April 2018, not as cold as the one in early April 2012.

I was looking at the April thread from two years ago (2018) the other night out of curiosity. Around this time back then everyone was marveling at the winter-like cold in the upper Midwest. We even got brushed with some of it, and PDX fell to 34 degrees on the morning of the 3rd while record lows (in some cases late season records) fell across Montana. I hit 30 that morning.

We had some snow with that one up here and a high in the upper 30s.

A teaser for the nipple hardening summer to come!

We had a major snow event March 23/24 that year. Mid-February through early April was very cold in 2018. May 2018...Yikes.

I am still scarred from that month. That was also around the time we saw the rise of Farmboy.

Looks like anything even resembling a seasonably cool airmass keeps a safe distance through hour 192 on the Euro.

Whew...I was sweating bullets!

Down here seems coolish this weekend. At least on the GFS.

I can’t say I’ve been looking at the models too much as of late (it’s spring) but with all the bed-shitting reactions I expected it to be a wall to wall smorgasbord of cold spring-killing temps near 80. Needless to say it’s not.

It’s a warm up after a cold down, folks.

IMO it's fun to have something to track to take your mind off of everything else. I don't really see any harm in it. But I know...tracking weather is dumb and keeping track of coronadeaths is also dumb. Why can't everyone be smart like me and see those things are dumb

Some people want to have sunshine and warmer weather so they can enjoy being outside and gardening to take their minds off everything else.    And they are not obsessed with padding already above average mountain snowpack or having perpetually cold and wet conditions outside.   Those people are really dumb.

Just trying to offer some perspective for those who don’t try to be the cult of preferences. No need to pick another fight over it.

Once I get over my dumb preferences and bed-shitting reactions I will work on that.

I think it’s safe to say you’re overreacting a tad. Just ask the subject matter expert timself.

Settle down. Just having a little fun with it and poking at the overreactions to the MISERY of this late winter/spring so far. Heavens knows you won't.

I can remember a pretty stellar week of weather in mid-March, and early March. Also a fairly sunny February. But I know overreacting is a warm way street for you two. ;)

It feels like the Jesse-Tim saga has reached a new low. A little pathetic.

I am not even sure its going to warm up yet.   But either way... you don't see me ranting with all caps about people not in line with my preferences.

I’m working in Victoria today but reports are it’s snowing at home in Shawnigan. Doubt it’s sticking.

Nice. Seems like snow levels are pretty low across the region today but precip has been quite sparse down here.

12Z EPS is a little warmer than previous runs for next week... and also shows a new surge of cold air coming down from the continental divide eastward next weekend.

Just had a slushy rain shower briefly change over to wet snow before it ended.

I was pretty surprised to see us get a light snow shower here a few hours ago. Up to 48 now and breezy SW winds so I doubt we will be seeing any more snow.

Tacoma WA elevation 300’

Monthly rainfall-3.56”

Warm season rainfall-11.14”

Not a total surprise to me, given that I’m in a more favored area for lowland snow than you are, it’s a cold pattern, and I already saw flurries on the 1st.

It's called clown range for a reason.
