July 2023 PNW Observations and Discussions

Recommended Posts

The next few days should be smoke free for Western Washington.  The biggest smoke producer in the northwest right now is the Flat Fire in the Rogue River Valley of Oregon.  It is the sole fire producing smoke that is covering southern and central Oregon and flowing up towards Eastern Washington.  Yes there are other fires, but they are not producing much smoke according to models.  Still, but of that smoke will be at higher atmosphere elevations unless you are in Grants Pass who has had three years of terrible smoke now.  Smoke conditions should not effect much of Western Oregon and the smoke does dissipate moving into early next week.

The massive smoke-fest that is British Columbia is currently blowing smoke east and northeast.  So we should be good for the short term. Cooler weather next week will hopefully help firefighters.

The wildfire season in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho has been very very tame.  Much like last year, it has been very quiet.

I'd love to live up around Everett especially in fall/spring with the PSCZ.

Come on over!  We're the last unfounded location in the Puget Sound!  Development is just starting and prices are just now starting to go up.  You can get it in before you get priced out! For example, it is 74F right now while Seattle is 82F.

It's been great so far in terms of smoke.   But still long way to go.

Finishing August off like 1997 would be decent. Not incredible, but decent.

August 2021 had a genuinely chilly back half after the big midmonth heatwave, even from the perspective of 1951-2000 climo. Maybe we can squeak something like that in given the modern precedent?

Wet September that year basically everywhere west of the Cascades. Now considering how latitudinally hit-or-miss fall storms can be in the Northwest...

I was convinced they had it there. Still won the series at least.

Son is already wanting to go back to Seattle next April, maybe for the Guardians series during break. I'm guessing with this El Nino, maybe less risk of snow over Snoqualmie? Of course that's Barbenheimer range right now.

Poor Julio has a massive elephant on his back right now. Thinks he should be carrying them to 100+ win season when it’s really a team that looks as good as its record has been from day one.

It seems so predictable that Julio will strike out when the game is on the line.    Really annoying.

I was out of town camping this weekend.  Looks like the blue Jays bullpen blew a couple games Friday and Saturday.  They are pretty hot and cold.

86/61 day today after and 88/60 yesterday. The persistence of high end warmth this month has been pretty crazy this month even though we haven’t technically seen as many 90s as some recent Julys. That theme looks to continue after our near miss for rain tomorrow evening.
