I am definitely under the throes of seasonal affective disorder. I'm looking at old pictures of mine back on warm, bright summer afternoons, and I'm feeling this deep yearning to bask in the warmth. Definitely looking forward to Spring and the changing seasons, probably more so than I ever have by this point in the year. I just hope we get a more typically beautiful summer this year, with lots of 72/48 type days and burning morning clouds, thrown in with some 85Fish days and 65Fish days; instead of the torching of the last decade. That sounds heavenly.

I should note I am still rooting for COLD and SNOW, as long as we can still get it! Cold anomalies are always a blessing in our new era of warming, and my itty bitty weenie heart would root for a foot of powder in the dead of July. But dreaming of mostly sunny afternoons, a steady breeze out of the west, some residual tufts of stratocumulus catching the afternoon's hazel tones, and a field of altocumulus castellanus ominously gliding over it all promising a dazzling display of nocturnal thunderstorms.... 😌

Last nights chorus of frogs and this mornings summer tinge has brought back that “I need to work on the yard” primal urge. In our warming climate, the days of a 72° degree July day might be gone, so I’m rooting for overcast and 90° soup. Makes for some exciting weather.

And sad. Disturbing to see bare ground at places at 7k feet on crystal mountain web cam. The extreme Temp swings this month are crazy.

Was talking to my colleague in Minneapolis, and they are having a crazy warm winter as well.  He said his kids are out riding their bikes instead of sledding, and he bought a new snowblower for this winter that has yet to be used.  Last winter he was having to get up on his roof to shovel it because of the snow loads.

He also said lots of folks are falling through the ice while ice fishing....

Currently 51 here, but I am guessing we will warm up a bit later in the day.

SEA was 61 degrees at 3 AM last night. No wonder the frogs were out.

Average July low is 58, so in a way it was warmer than a normal Summer night.

The sunrise this morning was absolutely otherworldly. One of the best I’ve seen in a long time. At one point the whole sky turned pink and orange, illuminating the swirling clouds overhead, and I could have sworn I was on Jupiter.

I am sure our daffodils are poking up but that is almost always true at the end of January.    I noticed over the weekend that our daylilies are coming up now as well.   That is a little early.   They were coming up in late January 2019 and then were buried in snow for 5 weeks and when the snow melted they just picked up right where they left off.

This winter might just be toast. At least we had a week of cold and a little snow. Next winter should be much better! Just odd to have total snow depths of 20” or greater for the last 6 or so seasons…And then to have a measly 3” this winter.

The cold stretch was undeniably memorable but overall it’s looking like a very el niño winter, which makes sense and was largely predictable. I kind of wish we in Portland would have avoided the measly 1.5 inch official snow total before the ice, for no other reason than to not have to hear all the local mets talk about how overdue Portland is for a no-snow winter. Whether we indeed fall back into la niña or stay on the cold side of neutral, there is reason to think next winter offers a much better setup.
