December 2014 Observations for the Pacific Northwest

According to the NWS that 62mph gust at PDX was the strongest since the '95 storm.

I suspect some debris was blown into the windows.  You'd think they'd be able to survive these gusts.

Wind started down here around 12:20, with peak gusts between 1:30 and 2:30 or so.  It's still breezy out now but the higher gusts have definitely subsided.  

Pressure was 29.13" around 12:30; up to 29.38" now.

Definitely a little more punch than I expected. The adiabatic drying really helped.

Mark hits the nail on the head. The outage numbers don't reflect widespread damaging winds. Our peak gust at my office a pretty exposed location on the river has been 40mph tops. Very weak eug-pdx gradient.

I just read Mark Nelsen's blog post and the Hillsboro, Aurora and McMinnville airport sensors lost power after 3pm so we don't know now if they got higher gust than the ones they reported at 3pm.

Odd that the Seattle NWS has gone overboard with their forecasts while the Portland NWS has been on the money. Usually it's the opposite.

 

Don't we have to wait for the forecasts to verify before saying who is on the money?

This has nothing to do with weather.    I am actually pretty happy with the weather.   The next 4 days looks pretty nice and the storm tonight is fun to track.   It passing in a trajectory that protects my area... I would rather watch you guys have fun on this one.

Impressive reports from around Portland. I figured they'd gust into the low-mid 50's but I did not see low 60's coming.

 

Still fairly calm here in Seattle but things should start ramping up in the next few hours as the low keeps chugging up the Coast.

Sounds like the PDX NWS may have actually under-forecast the storm, given the reports.

 

Those poor suckers. They either swing for the fences with snow and strikeout, or they are caught with their pants down by the wind.

Duuuuuude... your average is 80 inches a year. What do expect from Sept-Dec??? Gotta rain a GREAT DEAL to get to your average. Not even half way there.

This storm has exceeded expectations for sure. Much more impressive than the October event. Wind is roaring mightily and the trees and traffic lights here are swinging around out of control.Too bad the Hillsboro airport sensor lost power.

On the water? Sure. I think the I-5 corridor airport stations will report peaks in the 45-55mph range.

I'm sure it's weakening some, but certainly doesn't seem to be collapsing based on satellite. Looks like the low center is a little NW of Astoria now. 

 

Anyone have the latest pressure number?
