July 2017 PNW Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

You picked up on the 'firehose' event in June... it did happen as you predicted but it certainly did not define the month as being wet and cool.

Well put.  That *Firehose* only netted us about a quarter inch and the next day only ten hundredths.  It was barely anything except miserable clouds. Sadly that was our last shot of precip.  So much for that *wave train* that Phil predicted.  I think it got derailed.

The colder/higher equatorial tropopause and reduced static stability aggregate alters the low frequency rossby train and waveguide such that it reduces the chances of big anticyclonic breakers/-EPO in the long run across DJF, however, a stronger BDC, weaker PV, and cooler globe in -QBO winters can possibly make up for the more hostile NPAC.

The biggest challenge in -QBO/-ENSO is getting the vodka cold onto our side of the globe, for the most part.

2005-06 comes to mind.

-QBO/-ENSO with record cold in Eastern Europe in January...most of us know how January 2006 went down in the PNW.

12Z ECMWF shows 103-105 around Portland one week from today and close to 100 up here.

Not good.

Good news is that it might turn brutally hot just when Phil leaves... he is always so lucky that way.

Latest Euro is pretty toasty the first week of August.

Nice to finally see that ridge shoved a little further west!! I wouldn't complain if the ridge axis went another couple hundred miles west either.  :P

Surprised I didn't post here on Monday.. I had a huge storm. I was just a couple miles north of where probably hail/wind was occurring, but still very frequent and nasty lightning event. Sections of downtown may have had its best storm in 5 years. Seemed like Lake Ewauna got slammed.

Some pictures of a forming shelf cloud approaching.. I did take a TON of video (10GB, 1:30 hours) but I have only gotten through a portion of that. Below the pictures I'll lay links of two youtube videos I know you'll all like. About 7:15pm or so NWS Medford issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning actually including Klamath Falls. From what I recall, last one to be issued for this town was back in September 2011.

Over the years many of the warnings were in the vicinity of this area. No official large hail reports or wind reports but if I were to give an opinion, this was either very close to being severe or was barely one briefly.

Here is the first video uploaded. Extremely close lightning several times.. You probably can't tell but there were at least 4 different sections of the sky producing lightning flashes/CG's all at once. This was the most intense lightning I experienced so far in my life. There was often 1-2 second differences between each flash/CG, sometimes less than 1 second. During the daytime my camera cannot show 100% of everything going on.

1080p is available on both videos.

Here is a zoomed in radar shot while the lightning was being filmed. You can see here what kind of situation I was in. I simply wasn't sure where to have camera aimed. And there was a risk of either getting the camera wet or struck by lightning.

Sunset after 8pm. Vivid deep colors. It looked better in person. Lightning still continued though less in frequency compared to earlier.

I think this covers everything!

Yesterday I did have a brief storm but we're talking less than typical east side type convection. Though there was mammatus on a few occasions. Maybe I'll share a few of those photos later this evening.

Well done. Fantastic video. I hope we have more of those storms this summer, there is currently a storm just north of me in Terrebonne now.

Or Yellowstone, or Alaska, or Costa Rica, or....

I have been to Europe, not Alaska though or Costa Rica. The rest of the world is nice for visiting, but I would die if I lived in Europe. There is so much alcohol there and water is so expensive. It was 3-4 euros just to drink water. I've been to Paris, Germany, London, and the Balkans.

As is your anxiety about it.

I would pay to see a soaking rain right now.   But I assume you are looking down the road farther.  I suspect this coming fall and winter will score pretty high on the TIM index.   I have very low expectations after October.

Yeah both cities have a lot to offer depending on what your interests are. Missoula definitely has more of a "College Town" feel to it with UM more integrated into the city. Whereas in Bozeman, MSU isn't quite as much as the focal point. Graduates at MSU tend to put down roots after graduation versus UM they seem to move on.

Bozeman does have thousands of miles of trails as well with amazing hikes very close to downtown and MSU while also having a free bus service (Streamline) and you can float down the Madison here! Something for him to keep in mind, summer fun doesn't last all that long here in either city. If your son enjoys snow sports, I think Bozeman wins out hands down. One ski resort (Bridger) within 20 minutes with free bus service everyday (Streamline) and another (Big Sky, largest ski resort in the states) just 45 minutes away.

I've attached a few pics from just a couple of hikes that we've done over the last few weeks; all within a 20 minute drive from MSU.

Great to hear that he enjoyed the campus! It really is a great looking campus and is only growing. Whatever he decides I don't think he can go wrong but... Go Cats!!  :P

This is awesome, thanks for all of the info and the pictures, I'll definitely be sure to share this info and the pictures with him.  He's used to summer not lasting that long having grown up in Bellingham, and while he's never skied he did say its something he wants to do.  I think I said this before, I don't envy him and his decision, they both look like great options for him.

I have to admit I am partial to MSU.
