This is probably the latest peak of fall color I’ve seen around here, but it ended up pretty nice in the end. I think getting a decent amount of rain before the colder temps and night time freezes arrived helped.

Same, I don’t track it or anything but it seems super late. I know I have raked leaves in October before and haven’t had to do that yet this year.

My analog gauge broke during the February 2019 extravaganza since it was forgotten about with the weather station I had just installed right before the madness hit. The plastic analog one froze and broke. However it’s still in the same spot now untouched and all of the moss/mold/floaties/dead flies, etc have pretty much welded it shut again!

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

On top of the roof. Andrew set it up because if I get on a ladder I could fall off the house when I have a seizure...which happens all the time.

Next time I’m down I ll risk my life and climb up to make sure it’s not clogged. There aren’t any trees nearby though, but it’s possible.

Heck I’d send you one just to atone my sins. It would also be nice to see how much rain you actually get. I was always under the impression that Springfield averaged a bit more than Eugene thanks to upslope.

I was too when I lived in Eugene at UofO. I also thought the same of Springfield when I lived in Monmouth in the central Willamette Valley, which is a fairly dry location, especially in AR events because the coast range tends to be pretty high up around Laurel Mtn and Mary's peak and the like. Down this way, the coast range and Kalapuyas are not as high up relative to our more elevated terrain. I figured it always got more precip in this location. Then I moved here and, well, maybe it's just been an anomaly and the other shoe will drop but it hasn't even felt all that wet of late. I've had to manually empty out the sides of my pool cover because I'm not very good at covering it with a tarp and during the AR,  I was surprised at how I was able to keep up with it every tenth of an inch or so, maybe it was more than that but it felt like it also wasn't raining as long as I thought it would or as long as the forecasters were saying. Again, that might just be due to some microclimate shitt.

Sorry, but basing a location’s precip climatology on how dry it’s felt, how fast your pool cover filled up, and that it wasn’t raining as long as it seemed like it should have seems fairly anecdotal. 🤷🏻‍♂️

At very least it’s not enough information to make the claim that your area is drier than other parts of Eugene/Springfield. Maybe someone who knows more about the long term climo down there could chime in.

I'm wondering if we might see a kind of repeating progression this season.

1. Chilly / dry / inversionary (ridge too close)

2. Pattern breaks down with heavy rain / mild

3. Colder active pattern

4. Strong GOA block with Arctic air

Wash, rinse, repeat.

I'm genuinely concerned that the dryrot in the only possible fenceposts I can use will break them. I also am not able to afford a drill. Also, we've already had bums pull some of the fenceposts down and I'm not very good at putting them back up. The fenceposts on the other side of the house have the neighbors house blocking precip from the SW so it wouldn't be an accurate reading.

Oof my prose is falling apart, fuckk these seizures!

Decent amount of moisture on radar but most doesn’t seem to be reaching the ground so far. Hopefully SEA won’t pick up and measurable rain so they can maintain their dry streak.

You could glue and clamp a piece of decently thick plywood to the fence post to give you something good to screw into.  I would use good carpenters glue and do it when it's totally dry.  Maybe even pre drill the holes in the plywood to match the gauge before you glue it on to the post.

The evaporative cooling from that band of precip should keep us well below 50 again today.  This is a pretty chilly east wind for early November.

The imperfect shape of the jar would give you inaccurate readings.  No way to accurately measure 1/100" with a ruler either.

From my own observations, I'm usually a bit wetter than what EUG shows. I did use a manual rain gauge for a couple of years until it got disgusting and I threw it out. Regardless of that, it has been abnormally dry down here for more than a decade. Our 30 year running avg precip has dropped to about 40 inches per year which is about the same as Seattle and not that far off from Portland.

As far as Springfield getting less precip than EUG, I don't put any stock into that in the long run. However, TWL has only lived there for a few years so there could easily be some short term discrepancies during that time frame.

In general, when the storms come straight from west (on shore flow), Springfield easily gets as much as Eugene, if not more. If the storms come from any other direction (NW, SW) some parts of the area will get more or less. This includes our sparse snowfall as well. If we have cold enough for snow onshore flow directly from the west, TWL will win out every time. This hasn't happened much recently however. It happened many times when I was a kid.
