April 2017 Observations and Model Discussion for the Pacific Northwest

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't join the military in a million years. Just not my thing. And when faced with the option of going into debt or not going into debt for a higher education I chose the latter.

As for working, I have been working and going to school full time since my AmeriCorps term ended. Like I said, scholarships haven't covered everything. They just made college a lot more doable without incurring debt.

Plus I just really enjoyed the opportunity to work teaching kids who are struggling in their regular classes to read. We also ran an after school homework help club, a chess club, and other programs.

Cool...I'm not dogging on you. I was kinda an a$$ in my earlier comment, sorry. That's commendable. What are you studying?

Has it been wet over in Medford? That's about where Bend's downwind fetch comes over from.

I wouldn't say that is necessarily true. Precipitation there comes from lots of directions. Some of their biggest totals can come during northerly flow thanks to the higher terrain to their south. Really pattern dependent.

No worries, I didn't take it that way.

Going for my bachelor's in Earth & Environmental Science. Represents a broad area of knowledge I have a lot of interest in/passion for. Geology and/or meteorology are both on the table.

That's true. Cold northerly flow on the backside on a departing low are our biggest snow producers. 3 1'+ storms in the last two winters. Moist southerly flow can also be decent rain produces but it needs to be more directly from the south rather than SW.

Yup, SW flow down there would equate to maximized shadowing, regardless of source.

I would have probably done very well in the military. I think in the end I have a little to much independence and value my personal freedom a little to much.

I think if I could have made it through the first year or two I would have probably made a career out of it. Given I turned 18 in 2002, it would have been an interesting ride.

I think about my friends who served quite a bit.

Wow, todays CFS is very troughy and wet for June.

May looks pretty bad too. April looks like our best bet for nice weather in the next 90 days. ;)

I think about my friends who served quite a bit.

Without a doubt if we were attacked and I had the physical ability to serve (was healthy, young enough etc) I would enlist. I disagree with our adventurism overseas, regime-change etc so I can't in good conscience serve at present...nor would I advise my son or daughter to join if the status quo remains unchanged 15 years from now.

12z GFS was nice though. Ensembles were "meh" but suggestive of nicer weather in the longer range. Maybe a decent Easter too with good potential to be the warmest day of the year thus far.

Have the baby shower down in Eugene on Saturday so glad it looks to be a nice day.

Are you having another baby? Congrats!

Unfortunately, it looks like areas to the south may cloud up the soonest on Sunday. Although it is still a ways out.

Doesn't seem to jive with the fact that the wide majority if the country, even most of the west, torched massively in February and March.

Somewhere ended up a little below average. That place happened to be the far NW corner of the country. Wouldn't read too much into it.

Doesn't low solar activity have a direct correlation to increased blocking in GOA? Which would increase cooler regimes in the PNW?

Is it a scholarship if it's not contingent on school attendance? Or is the award contingent on school attendance? If not, seems it's just a payment for services. If it is, it's probably less than you would receive working the same number of hours at a job. Still seems like the GI bill would be preferable and only a year longer (4 years service for 4 years of schooling covered).

I spent 2 years in Brazil both doing missionary work and volunteer work (much of it was teaching English classes). No remuneration and no scholarships...but I don't regret the experience.

With the national guard, the deal was a 6 year commitment, but of course only one weekend a month of service and two weeks in the summer. The GI bill paid for about 90% of my education, and then getting the VA loan for buying homes and being able to use USAA for insurance/banking needs has been a huge bonus. One of the best choices I ever made.

Yeah the VA Loan is a good deal.

Yeah, another girl.

Congrats. We have a baby girl on the way, probably coming early, they figure in the next 2-4 weeks.

On a more depressing note, this Saturday we are having a memorial service for my dad, so we are hoping for a nice day. Cancer got to him before he ever got to be a grandpa.

Sounds like you have the same problem we have here for the most part, though we tend to do well with W or even WSW flow, but SW is awful. I'm sitting at 0.7" so far this month while locations as little as 15~20 miles north of here or about the same distance west of here are already at over 1.5" on the month; and north of that even areas in the Vancouver Island range shadow have 2~3". I can't remember the last time we had a decent non-winter convective shower here, last year was sparse and this year is shaping up to be similar so far.

You have to serve 2 years on active duty to get 90% GI Bill coverage. Quit peddling bullshit.

It ended up being 90% of my college costs. I joined in April 2001, and had completed a year of community college at that point. I also received a $8k bonus.

No BS, and pretty uncool of you to accuse me of that. I've been posting on this forum for almost 10 years, and have always been completely honest. Why the hell would I start lying now, especially a lie as pointless as that?

Few more warm GFS runs in the 11-15...let's see if the ensembles jump on board a bit more today. Drier looks like a good bet and this time of year drier usually equates to warmer.

Yeah... definitely looking a little more hopeful at least.

I'm sure you are telling the truth.

Actually going the military route (especially Air Force) is a great way to get your college paid for.  Especially as a medical professional (RN, PA, MD). Plus you get great civil service preference in federal jobs. Good ones making six figures. (which are hard to get these days).

If you have any desire to be a archeologist/geologist, or forecaster you will have a huge leg up on those without veteran preference. Pretty much the best jobs in many of those fields are federal Not many archeologist outside of federal service make six figures.

Shouldn't expect to get 6 figures for the bolded. Shale oil geologist can make a lot more during boom times.

Most people who go into geology won't be going into the oil industry. That is a small subset. And I'd bet most of those top people came from geophysics backgrounds.

And yes you could easily make high five and maybe six figures in federal service in many of those fields. The Army Corps of Engineers has a boat load of geologist (hydrologist etc.) making six figure salaries. The Dept. of Navy, and Interior (etc...) have quite a few of archeologist jobs that top out making high five, low six figures.

Quite a few young people just don't know about those jobs. And these days those with veteran preference have a leg up. You just have to play your cards right.

That is all I was suggesting =)

Quite a few young people just don't know about those jobs. And these days those with veteran preference have a leg up. You just have to play your cards right.

That is all I was suggesting =)

I wouldn't be surprised if the oil industry employed a quarter to a third of all geologists in US during the height of the shale boom. Problem is half of them are laid off now, and don't have much of a hope of getting another geologist job in next 3-5 years after getting laid off, so you can't really call it a career.
