December 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

OK, fine.  You win.  The 2010s were consistently and dramatically way way way colder than normal in the West.  For the entire decade.  Without exception.

That's not what anyone's saying. Just that the whole 2010's wasn't a June 2015 warm anomaly.

Three years ago right now we were being treated to some of the coldest/snowiest/consistentest model runs thus far in the millennia.

Ahh, yep you're right. Wasn't there 1 or 2 runs that buried PDX In 3' of snow? All the fun shifted north.

Hanukkah Eve windstorm of 2006 off the Washington Coast on December 15, 2006 at 2:00

That was a fun wind storm. For my location near West Gresham this was far more powerful than December 1995. We had gusts 55-65mph for probably 6 hours and the worst of it was east of I-205. On the flip side the big 1995 wind storm was far worse west of I-205.

Just got word from my radiologist that a pulmonary nodule has been discovered in my left lung during my most recent check-up.

It appears small enough to treat and at this time, has not grown or spread but strongly advised to go back in for a CT scan to determine further action.

Needless to say I am a bit shocked that at forty years old I "may" have cancer. I have lived a fairly active life coupled with good diet and no detrimental activities such as smoking, binge drinking, etc. There is no history of cancer in my family so I'm at a loss as to why this issue has suddenly surfaced.

Very sorry to hear this. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers that this is benign and fully treatable. Stay strong.

This run won’t be as good as the euro but it’s a step towards it

Yeah. Closer though. I see the GFS Op made a move towards the EURO with the energy pinching off much better. The GFS/GEM and their ensembles will come around perhaps starting as soon as tonight hopefully. 18z GFS Ensembles. Meh. Not there yet. No changes. Only cold onshore flow for a few days. Low snow levels, but that is not what we're looking for in the lowlands. PDX mean temp -7c. Yakima -5c. That indicates no backdoor cold air to tap into. Unfortunately. Fortunately there is still plenty of time for things to improve. I think they will. I wouldn't put much stock in the GFS Op/Ensembles right now.

My first look into this was this exact excerpt from Google, alas it gave me some hope and insight but still didn't help the fact that the "C" word is still in the discussion.

You are definitely in my thoughts, and I am hoping for the best.  The "C" word sucks to hear, but hopefully whatever is going on has been caught early enough to be dealt with.  You are also lucky to live in the PNW as they are doing some pretty incredible things at Fred Hutchinson.  A distant relative from Georgia literally had the means to go anywhere in the world for cancer treatment and get the best treatment money could buy after he was given 6 months to live  He came to Seattle.

As hard as it is, be very careful with "Dr. Google."  You have found some encouraging news which is good, but if you look long enough you will inevitably find the opposite, and without proper context, could lead to a lot of anxiety that may not be warranted.

I also know both sides of  the issue from personal experience...my daughter developed epilepsy as a teenager, so naturally we turned to Dr. Google.  We stumbled across something called "SUDEP" or sudden death by epilepsy.  After a sleepless night and an emergency appt with her neurologist, we find out that with her scenario, she was more likely to win the lottery *and* be struck by lightning than die from SUDEP.  We also got chastised about Dr. Google, and got counseling how to go about research in the future.

Hang in there and try to think positive!

The models continue to slowly improve.  In the case of the 12z ECMWF it was more than slow improvement!  The EPS gets progressively colder during the 8 to 15 day period now.  At this point it appears the coming month will at least be a better pattern than has been the average since 1982.

Some big league analogs starting to show up with the 18z GFS.  Jan 1969 makes its first appearance and Jan 1989 has been there for a few days now.

Lol. Y’all have no idea how many opportunities I’ve had over the years to post videos of convective snow bands/blowing snow, and decided not to, because I’m not a dïck.

At least a pic or two a lot of us would like to see
