Part I - January 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Right but of course you know the financial and logistical reasoning behind this right or is this just a general complaint detached from practical reality

I know that a huge part of the country can take this stuff in stride... and not leave parents as daycare operators for weeks.

Hills.   Blah... blah... blah.   We live on the side of a mountain here and its rarely a problem... unless we have 4 feet of snow in one night!

God forbid parents have to actually take care of their own ******* children.

What is sick is people expect schools to raise their kids.

"Attention then turns to the potential for an arctic air blast for the week of January 10-16.At this time there is high likelihood of unseasonably cold air across the state with all of the major mid-range weather forecast models predicting a deep trough over the western US."

Weird post.

Truly disruptive snowstorms beyond a few days are so rare around here that it's part of the fun for me.

Schools were closed on the east side for just about 2 weeks in February.

Its not right to send your child to school and build your work schedule around the hours they are in school?

Nothing says I don't care like sending your kid to public school if you have the means to do otherwise.

So we should all work at night then?... I think work schedules are set around the time of day and standard business hours, and when people are up, shopping and doing life... Stupid argument Tim!

Really? 850s compared to 12z Day 8.5 to 11 are COLDER this run for PDX and with strong east winds the arctic air is always deeper than modeled, especially low level. You know better than this.

I agree but now it seems we're going from an arctic air mass to a back door.  Not complaining because cold is cold but I was hoping for an actual arctic front that spins up some moisture as it passes and cold air moving in behind it.  Now I'm gonna get warmed nosed at some point.  Can't win.  LOL

I helped 4 stuck drivers last year on my way home from work when the snow hit.  One was a new F-250 WSDOT truck being driven by a kid who had no idea what he was doing.  He had no clue how to put it in 4 wheel drive.  As soon as he got it in gear he had no problem.  The second was in the same location at a traffic light.  The girl had moved up from California and had bald tires on a c-class Mercedes and with a lead-foot, she kept spinning and drifting closer and closer to an embankment.  Experienced driving matters in snow.

I hear the Seattle school district is going to just shut down for the rest of the year and try it again next fall.

If there is a flake of snow within 30 miles or there was a flake of snow within 30 miles within the last 2 months... then its best to close schools out of an abundance of caution. By time they can start up again it will be the middle of May so its not worth it.

Long term cold spells around here are really annoying in that regard. Black ice kills!!! But so does living. Applying their logic elsewhere... they should only operate schools in Minnesota in September and May. But kids there trudge to school in a foot of new snow and winds howling at 50 mph.

I would be more excited about this if people in the Seattle area could just go on with normal life when its cold and snowy.

Terrain, limited resources with snow removal equipment, and liability. Lawsuits up the ying yang if a school bus slides off a cliff.

Good Lord.

I get it, it is an unpopular opinion I will keep to myself. It is just unbelievable how much money we pour into our failing schools. There are some good examples of public schools, charter schools are publicly funded and sometimes perform well.

Oh man, it's not like there has ever been a GFS run that went bad and then a someone from the Salem area loses their s**t while others pile on.

This is actually pretty fun. Can't wait for Jesse to get offended. I think he volunteered in public schools for a few years.

TThat looks like a back door event to me or at least has the potential for one.

Yeah, even if we don't get a full on Arctic Blast, I want to develop enough of a cold pool where any systems coming from the SW or W would be snow if it tracks south of PDX. Similar to January 2017, the airmass wasn't the coldest but it was enough to produce snow with the icy cold Gorge east winds.
