July 2023 PNW Observations and Discussions

Lake perfection! Low 70’s and a brisk NW wind but it didn’t feel chilly at all. Well unless you spent half the day in the water…

Lost count of the amount of free booze. Wow I can’t even imagine the amount of blow rich people must do on these yachts.

Checking out central and northern BC web cams this morning (yes I am really bored and this is a weenie post) after that system passed through yesterday and overnight looking to see how bad the smoke might be later this week down here.    Not bad this morning.  In fact there might be little dusting of snow on the mountains and fairly clean air in most places.    First one is Fort Nelson way up in the NE corner of BC where its been really bad in terms of smoke... second one in Smithers farther south in the central part of BC.   It will be interesting to see if the fires get more active today and tomorrow with a north wind.

It was chilly up in the central and northern Interior last night.   My mom reported a low of 31F from our Cabin up at Watch Lake.

Interesting tidbit. When drought-stressed hardwoods suddenly receive a boatload of rain, they begin transpirating like crazy since they’re still in a state of water conservation. Vascular tissues initially saturate, then attempt to equilibrate.

Result is stooopid high dews in forested areas. There’s literally fog developing under the canopy under full sunshine at 12 noon. Sensor in the woods reads 81/81 right now. 😂

31F at Clinton BC and 29F at Tatlayoko Lake BC this morning.  Not too uncommon to get frosts up there in early July.  Only mid July to Mid August is reliably frost free at our Cabin.

That’s epic. Is it the topography there augmenting radiational cooling or something else?

Pretty morning. Partly cloudy with a low of 55 here. Now 66 and mostly sunny.

Nice to see the models trend toward a shorter spike of heat the last few days. Hope it keeps up, but looking at the ensembles not sure if we’re out of the woods yet for this one.

That section of the interior plateau is expensive and high elevation with just a few small rolling hills and mountains to the west and east.  Watch lake is close to 3500ft.   Nights are typically clear and calm in the summer and you get exceptional radiational cooling.  We can have frost at dawn and be drinking our coffee on the deck in 60F sunshine by 8 or 9am.  100 mile house sits in a depression just to our north and their record low for August is 21F.

Top map is current ground level smoke per Canadian smoke model and bottom map is forecast on Wednesday morning.  Looks like some low level smoke will make it into western WA by then... although it doesn't look too bad.   The current map shows a similar amount of ground level smoke in eastern MN right now as projected for western WA on Wednesday morning but its not really visible on web cams there.

Not too bad. Although both the op and GEFS are probably being too bullish with the cooler weather for week two. Euro and EPS both look warmer, albeit cooler than they were a few days ago when there was more agreement on a perma heatwave.

Honestly no hangover except my right eye in front of where I had my surgeries got a little puffed up during alcohol excretion. Definitely not pink eye since I touch both eyes a lot and my right eye is fine.

Most I’ve drank since college. 😂

M’lady says I’m a fun drunk. I become extremely gregarious.

Yeah I took this pic flying in a few hours ago. Wasn’t a cloud in sight. Though it looks like some convection is starting to fire a bit over the cascades.

I’m a happy chatty drunk! Unfortunately I rarely drink anything at all since anything more than one drink and I am in horrific shape the next day…More than a few drinks and I am down for two days. My body completely rejects alcohol.

I got two sides when drinking — happy chatty drunk or sad melancholic drunk. I do creative writing so I gotta channel some inner depression while drinking. I've been all about Kraken Rum lately. 🐙🥃
