October 2023 Weather in the PNW

Got down to 32F in Springfield for our first freeze here!

EUG only got down to 44F.

12F temp gradient between there and here as it looks like they had a bit of wind while we were calm.

I think we're headed to the upper teens tonight.  Only 34 at Noon

Already 48°F here under bright sun. Same clear skies that have helped with freezes have hurt with sub-50 maxima (only one to date, on Tuesday as the rain fell).

It's called clown range for a reason.

Almost certainly going to record another freeze tonight and probably yet another Saturday night.

Would not surprise me if I score more freezes in October than November this year.

I think I'm going to cover up my zinnias and a few other sensitive flowers...if I can get them through the next two nights they will probably make it through mid-November.

I’m not really expecting anything in November maybe a couple of freezes but I’m not really expecting snow because it usually only happens here every 4-5 years. I’ve never had it happen in back to back years at least in my lifetime. I got snow in November 2006, 2010, 2014, 2017, and 2022.

I want to sleep in tomorrow but I'm really curious if I get my first freezing temp tonight and I should stay up until it happens lol. NWS is thinking mid to low 20's at my location tonight.

Tonight will be another widespread freeze. Clear skies, offshore winds, and low DPs will mean the sky is the limit for outlying areas the next three nights. RGEM says some will push the low 20s tonight and tomorrow night.

If my memory serves me correctly (which is probably doesn't), the late summer-fall period of 2006 was particularly dry and warm(er). This was the same year that the famed Hanukkah eve storm took place. I'll never forget it as long as I live.

I would like to hear some anecdotes from folks on here regarding events that took place during El Nino fall-winter years.

El Nino certainly plays a unique role in the extreme weather events that take place here in the PNW. Whether it be wind, rain, snow or even unseasonably dry weather.

The anecdote king, snow_wizard, provides some interesting and fun anecdotal evidence in many regards. Hopefully he can chime in with his opinion on what this winter may hold in comparison to years past.

Back down to 32 already. Going to be a colder than last night. I won’t challenge the tundra of OLM tho. Probably see single digits on that thing.

Wow, it's barely past 6pm. You can still see some light out. I'm assuming y'all start cooling earlier in the day compared to elsewhere due to (quite literal) shadowing off the Olympics?

Son had running club tonight. It was cold out but it felt warmer than expected. He's warming up at home.

Down to 34F... waiting eagerly for it to drop below freezing so I can sleep in tomorrow.

Coincidentally, '14-'15 was also a Nino and had lots of wind events in the northwest. But both years in question were moderate Ninos. I don't know if the super blob ones have the right jet stream setup for that fun stuff.

Did you finish you masters yet? Any post grad activities planned?

No masters, I was going that route but realized halfway through that I absolutely hated academia, instead opted for the 2nd (physics) degree which I could finish 1yr sooner.

If all goes well I’ll be finished in 7 weeks. 🤞 Most likely I’ll end up working as an operational forecaster for the NWS. No glory but I’d enjoy it. We’ll see.

This is your first El Niño out here right?

Expect a very different progression vs the last three years. Most likely December will be warm and stagnant, with a flip to colder and more active sometime in January.
