December 2023 Weather in the PNW

7 out of 8 months were below normal here from Nov 2022 to July 2023. Also had several very notable cold events, including hitting -24 at DEN last December, one degree short of the all time monthly record.

That -6/-24 day was the second coldest day in Denver history.

The whole Western U.S. overall had a cold winter last year. But to Andrew's point, it was one of the very few places on the planet that ran cold during that stretch of time.

Welp I'm actually heading out and will be back later. Feel free to post the run Day 1-10 should be absolutely scintillating if not exhilarating! Oh boy!

Also missing out on a scintillating discussion over in the sports thread about this crazy TNF game between your Chiefs division rivals. 😁

And I was expanding on Andrew's point. Wasn't just the PNW.

Could be decades before we have another winter like that in the west.

It was certainly the most uniformly cold winter across the whole West basically from the coast to the western plains in quite awhile.

2016-17 was colder for the northern half of the West, but the Southwest was much cooler last winter.

Even more impressively, the cold lingered through the spring for most of the West this year.

Oh yeah. The February-April anomaly was probably a lot better in the PNW given May was one of our warmest on record regionally. I bet we won’t see another November-April as chilly across the west for another 20-30 years.

Sorry I haven't been around as often lately for 00z runs. I've been pimpin', and pimpin' ain't easy.
Nah. Bowling. Lots of practice now that my vertigo is gone. Not being able to bowl for almost 23 years, so trying to get my timing right, footwork, release on the ball, etc. I was averaging 218-222. Right now I'm about 215, so pleasantly surprised and really thankful. I'm hoping to get back into regional tournaments and be highly competitive. With that being said....

Does anyone want 00z re-caps? or nah?

I was a 194 kinda guy until I blew my meniscus and ACL playing old man basketball.  Then co-vid arrived.  I have not bowled in 5 years.  I guess I need to get back out!

I'm a nah.

East wind event/storm possible Sunday night into Monday am for the Western Gorge and east of I-205? 850s warm to +13 to +15c west of the Cascade crest, 925s warm to +16c while cooling to 0c over the central/eastern Gorge. PDX-DLS is forecast at -10mb or so, but with this steep of an inversion squashing down the east wind layer I suspect this could get wild quickly.

Pretty encouraging to see the ECMWF weeklies and the GEFS extended both liking the period around Jan 10 to 15 for -PNA.  Looks like a good shot at -NAO and maybe even -EPO to go with it.

It's pretty remarkable to see the troughing dig so deep off the West Coast it actually send the worst of the torching well east of us and leaves the NW in a situation where inversions can give us below normal temps at times.

East wind here... 49 in North Bend.    But SEA just dropped from 43 to 39 as the mid level clouds are lifting north and the wind died there.

Should be a warm day with a decent amount of sun... ECMWF shows mid 50s in Seattle and upper 50s out here.

Partly cloudy and 34 this morning. There is some light frost on the rooftops out there. Looks like a nice sunrise could be in progress soon.

Ended up with a 50/38 spread yesterday. Midnight low. Partly to mostly cloudy with a little drizzle early then some areas of light rain a bit after sunset. System mostly washed out over us, though.
