January 2024 Weather in the PNW (Part I)

I think Wilsonville or so was the prime latitude for that particular storm.

I remember amounts being lighter on the west side. I believe even down to Eugene had snow so it was pretty widespread. The Salem area got about 3-6” with higher amounts east of I-5. We had about 6” in Silverton.

Wow!

The EPS was way better than the 500mb mean would indicate.  A lot of cold members there.

Definitely seeing a cluster of arctic members across ensembles after the 10th.  That 10th-15th period is likely our target for arctic air this winter.

It was below freezing here for a full 2 weeks.  Seems like Andrew generally scores a lot of foothill level snow in the cold onshore flow that often sets up south of the arctic front.

100% as frustrating as those patterns can be that is one of the best setups for bigtime snow here. Especially during the heart of winter.

Something must be broken with the weather. It is somehow warm and sunny down here in the Eugenes. That hardly ever happens this time of year. Oh, and the Ducks won another NY6 bowl game. If we could play Warshington a few more times we could easily prove who the better team is.

There was a big N/S temp gradient in January 1969. I believe January 2017 was slightly colder than 1969 at EUG.

🥰 Not to mention a few lovely members featuring 50-burgers!

Those are obviously what made the mean look so bad.  The point was there are a lot of good members for how poor the 500mb mean looked for the third trough.

Meh. It didn't make much difference. It DUMPED in 69. The snow didn't care if it was 30 degrees or 28 degrees. We're about due for something like that to happen again. I will throw snowballs at TWL when it happens.

At least the Portland area got into the sun today.  Looks like the northern and southern WV were given a break from the gloom.   No such luck for the majority of the WV though.

Sunny with high clouds here... temp is 49 in North Bend which might end up the high for the day.     East wind and incoming clouds will assure a mild night out here.

The bummer of it is the airmass is reasonably cool today.

Ended up pretty good here with a low of 30 and current temp 46.

Not really a cool air mass overhead today.  Temps seem in line with 850mb temps where there is sun.

Hoping for a bit of delay in all the Winter weather for a bit as I will be driving my daughter's new car back to TN next week.

Leaving 1/9 and heading south to Barstow, CA and then east on I40 to Nashville by 1/12.

Would prefer no snow, but at least it's a Subaru Forester

My grandparents owned a marina in Mill Bay that winter.  My mom remembers it being locked in ice, with substantial icing over of many Salt water Bays

Jan 69 already had cold air in place (at least over here) and 11" of snow on the ground on Jan 1st.  a brief warm up then the hammer drop around the 2nd week.  but there was snow cover the whole month.  doesn't seem like the best anal log.

also 42" of snow on the ground on 2/1/69

Where was the 42 inch reading?

In many ways that strong gradient is a side effect of the intense snows. Hard to have one without the other.

Now 3-0 Kraken!   They said ice was getting a little soft but they made sure rink was placed in shaded area of field.   Of course that is not too hard on January 1st.
