-58F forecasted for White Sulphur Springs tonight.

This thing is a beast.  Feeling some 19th century vibes.

I think it might.  Ground may too warm though. 🤣

11.5. Most likely single digits within the next few hours…3 winter seasons in a row of single digits at my house?? incredible! Before that last time I had single digits was 2008, and before that it was probably 1989?

Something changed in our climate about 5 years ago. It's way different and I now expect 1 arctic outbreak every winter now and that is nuts

Current temp is 12 degrees, equally my low for this morning.  This should end up somewhere near zero if nothing pops up to change things.  This is without any snow at all on the ground!

I have to say the intensity of this cold is insane.  Actually coming in colder than what was expected.

Just another example of how extremely anomalous the event is. The impossible has happened. Day is night, up is down, Mossman has no snow…

Next winter could be amazing.  Strong Nino to Nina transition and a positive QBO.  And we have finally broken the January curse it seems.

Not just the January curse, but a top tier arctic outbreak curse. Broke it in a huge way.

Not sure.  There is something called daily summary stats or something like that.  Should be updated, but maybe the station you are looking at stopped updating.

It’s so cold Mount Baker is closing tomorrow. So are a few ski resorts in BC and even Montana. Never seen that happen before. Id trade this cold for more snow though.

Hopefully they get below 20 by midnight, that would be great

They seem to be on a promising trajectory. But they are also infamous for inexplicably stalling out for hours while other stations around them get colder.

Let’s just hope we can get rid of the nasty summers at some point. At least for a little while.

Maybe breaking the January curse along with mega-Niño will do the trick.

13.1F currently after a daytime high of 18F. Unfortunately my midnight high was 21F so that is what will go down in the records.

Most mesoscale models don't show it dropping very much from where it is right now, but the Euro shows we maybe have another 5-8 degrees to go so I'll stay optimistic. Today was impressive, but didn't quite hold up to December 27, 2021. On that day we had a daytime high 1 degree colder and a low of 6.7F. Of course I had almost 10" of snow on the ground at that point so who knows what the temperatures would have been without snow.

Going forward I think that will end up being the question from this event: how much colder could the temperatures have been with a widespread snowstorm going into it? But oh well, cool to be experiencing this event in real time.

NAM almost gets there, definitely trending in the right (north) direction quite well, should get there eventually.

F*** the north trend, go a bit south that way salem gets more snow and less freezing rain, in feb 2021 my family in salem lost power for 1.5 weeks because of the freezing rain, I don't want that to happen again.

I am not wishing destruction on anyone by wanting it to snow in my backyard, far from it.

I'd pay money to change our summers.

All it is doing is destroying our forests. All my hemlocks are almost dead on my property. 70 degrees is all we need, maybe a couple weeks of that and the rest can be cloudy and 65 and I'd be in heaven.

There, too? The hemlock carnage in the old growth forest in Stanley Park is just terrible.

Completely understandable. Everyone getting snow would be great, but that can't happen so I'm rooting for less freezing rain.

But who knows, maybe the 850s will be colder than forecast and everyone can get some snow, but that seems unlikely.

Can't wait to see the final numbers this beast puts up across the board. And wishing loads of snow for everyone the the rest of this event.

Here was Lake Tahoe earlier as the storm clouds began to roll in late this afternoon.

One thing blowing my mind about this cold wave is how a relatively small amount of elevation is making such huge difference.  For instance I-90/SR 18 junction is 11 while North Bend is at 15.  Also a very impressive 13 on an 1100 foot mountain just south of Bellevue.
