January Weather In The PNW 2024 (Part III) - The Warming Shot

Since the SE Willamette Valley is still below freezing with light N winds, I’m afraid this will not be a very fun event for any of y’all. It taking so long just to warm us up is not a good sign.

How much new ice have you had?

It looks like offshore flow is between surface and about 3k feet, that layer should cool and we might have sleet in Puget sound.  At 850mb the flow is from sw so it is warmer and saturated.  If the 850 flow was offshore we probably would have mostly snow.

Historically bad ice storm.

It’s going to be bad. See they have lines down again on I5. Friends that work for EPUD said we are up a creek for awhile.

Maybe if we all go outside and scream towards Cliff Mass in unison the collective air movement will push the cold away?

This reminds me of the Feb 2021 ZR event up here. Felt helpless waiting for the cold air to scour out while also waiting for linemen to finally save us. Sending good vibes your way.

Not sure, but looks like the south valley was forecasted to get .1 to .3" of freezing rain. I think a lot of people have already exceeded that.

I’m sure that in part is due to them forecasting our temp to rise above freezing by 4pm. We are still at 28.

Perhaps I didn't look closely enough due to post snow model fatigue (please see your doctor if your PSMF lasts more than 3 days) but seems like precip looks to be a little shorter lived than forecasted here. Would be nice. Stronger echoes on the tail end right now just north of Salem.

Quite a few mPing members reporting snow or rain/snow mix in the puget sound area. Wishful thinking, or something happening? Nothing on radar.

There could be snow for a little while before changing to ZR.  There are so many variables in play the models have no way to be perfectly accurate.

The snow covered Columbia Basin Cold Pool is going to continue to supply cold air to us via the east winds. They are not going to give up without a fight. They are going to fight the southerlies to the bitter end! 🥶

Well yes, but I would assume it would show on radar. The precip appears to be nowhere near the sound right now.

After such a warm December, it's nice to see how cold the entire country is today.

Quite pretty.  A week from now the NE quarter of the country is supposed to be in an epic torch.  Thankfully it appears we might avoid that.  Good chance we will see another round of near nationwide cold in February some time.

Dry air allowing some snow from these first few sacrificial bands to reach the ground. Work is going straight into sublimation instead of melting. Should last briefly before the column saturates and we transition to freezing rain.

Much colder today than I thought it would be.

I'm unhappy with my numbers today.  We just couldn't decouple last night. 38/26.

I would trade that ice storm with him anytime.  I love hard core destructive weather events. I don't want anyone Hurt but I love that stuff.  Really miss the wind storms we used to get.

I think the ECMWF might be up to it's old tricks of overdoing precip for this area tonight.  It has precip going through the entire night.  Sure don't see how the way this is playing out so far.

East wind? 35/18 here today. Way colder here…we had no wind at all last night. Yesterday was 37/21.

You did very well today.

Yes...the east wind was not my friend last night.  North Bend on the other hand has such a direct feed form the pass that they were pretty darn cold.

Wondering the same, radar doesn't show anything out there after this band.
