1998 was a very active and devastating tornado season though.

Our magnolia tree started blooming today with big white flowers opening up.   Seems a little early for that tree compared to previous years but not sure.  I know it's snowed on it after it started blooming a couple of times.

We are about 4-6 weeks from our vegetation really doing anything. If we ever had a spring like 2011 again we would be about 10-12 weeks away. Things were a bit delayed in 2022, but not by too much because March was fairly mild and we had some very warm weather in early April that year. By the end of April we usually have to start mowing and some of the trees will start leafing out.

Looks like PDX somehow pumped up to 75. SLE and EUG only hit 70 so far, they could bump up a degree or two I suppose. We only made it to 64 today. At least south of Portland today ended up a bit cooler than expected.

The first blooms on the Magnolia kobus in the courtyard here opened yesterday. Still only a few open. May be a few days before enough are open to perfume the courtyard.

12 weeks from now is the summer solstice... so everything was completely dormant up there until almost the end of June in 2011.   Interesting.  

2022 was the worst I have seen here... everything started leafing out on time in late March and early April and then went on hold and the trees never did look right that summer.

But HQM crashed from 73 yesterday to only 54 today.

I didn't say completely dormant, things even now are not completely dormant, there are some daffodils blooming, the weeping willow tree has buds. We don't have mid January conditions until late April, there are some buds on trees, grass starts greening up and growing slowly. But when I cam up here in mid-June 2011 for the well and septic inspection, the grass was hardly growing in the fields and the trees weren't fully leafed out.

Thankfully I tend to wake up before sunrise but as the nights get shorter it’s hard to maintain that.

Have you heard the Carolina Wren? Such an incredible number of decibels for such a small bird.

Not being leafed out in mid June is sad.   I have never see anything close to that here.   And in fact I am pretty sure Snoqualmie Pass trees are always leafed out by June 1st.

Yes, Beatrix-Farrand Forsythia, and has been blooming since February. It’s 40 years old and grows back more vigorously each time we cut it back. Amazingly hardy plant.

Also, for whatever reason in 2020 it started a second bloom cycle in Nov/Dec. Has done so each year since. Haven’t the slightest clue as to why, but it adds some flavor to the otherwise dead/dying landscape at that time of year.

Nothing is remotely close to blooming here.  There are some green blades of grass in my yard, at least. 

Lower elevation trails are so muddy.  Higher elevation trails are still snow packed.

Absolutely gorgeous day at Dash Point earlier at low tide. Still hanging onto 70F imby. 

Couldn’t get to hike last summer cause of classes, so I look forward to hitting up Rainier and around Lake Crescent for the first time sooner or later.

SEA also had a record high of 74 yesterday.  Quillayute hitting 80 is impressive for March. That ties the record high for the same date at PDX set back in 1947.

Amazing that it looks that green at that elevation in mid-March... and yet Andrew lives 2,500 feet lower and might be 10-12 weeks away from things coming to life.   Like another entire season away.

I stock every October. 9-11” trout. Most years they should survive the season but the last few summers have been too hot or too dry or both. Water temp can’t exceed 79
