I don't know what to say.  I can't even talk about a cold winter without people raking me over the coals.  It just seems kind of pointless for me to post here anymore.  I will even though it's not that much fun.  People will just have to ignore me if they want to I guess.

It blows my mind that people can't see how interesting it is to go from an endless warm pattern into a pattern that would bring an Arctic outbreak in the winter even if it pops back to warm again.

But, its not Winter

September 2021. This guy was on my couch while I was watching TV. That's a quarter there for reference. Yours does still look a little more stout though.

Probably wolf spiders.

Envy. I haven’t had any beautiful large spiders in my home in years.

It's called clown range for a reason.

had one in a corner outside above our front door last year like that, stuck around until we had a low in the lower 30s in late october and poof was gone.  didn't come back this year so probably went somewhere and died.  (not sure what spider life spans are but this one looked old)

I poked mine for fun and it backed up like "wtf dude... :(" was gone by morning

12Z GEFS is actually weaker and more progressive with the trough early next week than its 00Z run.    Something has to give... the operational runs are trending in the opposite direction as the ensembles and this is only 5 days away.

Most spiders live but a season. Tarantulas can live for many years, but there are none of those in the PNW.

People tend to notice spiders most in the late summer and early autumn because they have had all season to grow and are therefore at maximum size (particularly the females, who tend to be larger).

That one's Eratigena Atrica, otherwise known as the 'Giant House Spider'. And they get that name for a reason.... These gigantified, but quite harmless, cousins of the Hobo Spider can surpass 3" in length (I've seen one this big before, they can be truly intimidating.)

And just like the Hobo Spider, Eratigena Atrica migrated from England via cargo ships in the 19th century. Our very similar climate is ideal for them. In fact, our drier, warmer summers compared to England make the PNW an even more hospitable place for these critters. Again, they're completely harmless, and while technically invasive, they don't seem to be placing any undue strain on the ecosystem. Oh and they're kind of an anti-bug cheat code for the inside of your home. Love these guys...super useful and honestly quite fun to observe.

The torching will continue until morale improves.

The GEFS is not biting at all... in fact its going the opposite direction.    It does not even show 850mb temps going below normal at all early next week.   It just sends that trough eastward without cutting off.

The ensembles actually warmed some.  Operational is now well on the cold side of the mean.

Yeah... by mid-week the GEFS has the trough centered over Minnesota with another ridge out here.

I saw a Giant House Spider in my house last November. It was at least 2” long. Also worth noting that they are among the fastest spiders.

Spiders are pest control.

Yup. As long as they stay in the basement boiler room we let them be (they probably get in thru the piping to the outside, generally don’t hang around inside much anyway).

Haven’t seen a cricket or a roach down there in awhile.

Btw the one in my pic is a wolf spider. These motherf**kers are lightning fast. Can catch jumping crickets with little effort.

Operational GFS was nice for that one trough, still no real pattern change.

Euro still looks like it’ll be kinda snowy and cold in montana/Wyoming…but not very crazy by their standards. Temps on the 2m euro don’t look very extreme. Feeling more confident about going to Yellowstone and being able to enjoy a bit of snow along the way. I’m sure the models will probably trend towards the ensembles and be weaker too with the front.

12Z EPS still does not look very impressive with the trough early next week... just skims on by and ridging builds back in without significant cold air getting into the PNW.

Me. Every. Single. Time. If they are inside I get the vacuum. Thankfully we've only had small to medium sized bastards inside this Summer. A TON of those little tiny suckers. No giant house or wolf spiders since we had new screens put in the windows tightly fitting. It's really nice to be able to sleep knowing they can't crawl around the window screens anymore. I HATE SPIDERS :)
