I'm liking the fact the ECMWF was too warm for Whatcom County.  It might be underestimating this.

When I was in NE Oklahoma during the December 2007 ice storm temps were around 20 and I believe 850mb temps were +18c at one point.

It appears the real continental stuff has made it south of Mount Vernon now.  Looking good.

The other sign that the GFS is starting to recognize the greater depth of cold air in gorge outflow areas is the ice map. GFS pretty much is showing no ZR in PDX now and that precip instead falls as 1-2 inches of snow and some amount of sleet. The areas away from the gorge still get ZR though due to shallower cold air.

This snow map is looking a bit more like the UKMET too

This GFS map includes sleet as well in the snow total.

OT but I leave for Chicago tomorrow and would be bummed to miss what will likely be a very fun week here, but both the GFS and Euro now give them one of their biggest snowstorms in years Thursday. 18z GFS goes crazy with over 2 feet.

No doubt the 12z ECMWF was too anemic with the cold push.  Bodes well for Tuesday.

It doesn't seem to be having much trouble slipping south at all. I've seen it get hung up at Bellingham so many times. Today it's racing south. It dropped from 33F to 28.5F here over the past couple hours, looks like it took about 1~2 hours to cross the Strait.

Snow and flurries up north.  Rain in Oregon.

Let's take a peak at the convergence zone around Everett.  Snowing quite good in places, especially towards the Cascades.

As can be seen by the traffic cams, it's snowing in Everett, but actually accumulating as we move eat to places like Monroe and Sultan. Snow is also visible in Skagit and Whatcom Counties.

Wow!  The trends toward keeping it cold longer are dramatic on the GEFS runs today.  Much colder with the second shot.

The ECMWF is definitely too weak with the cold today so maybe a compromise?
