I’m in Florida now, and will be until 1/3.

Pattern changes always seem to happen up north when I’m down here enjoying life instead of geeking out. I’m sure it’ll happen again this year.

Fewest since Dec 2015 which had only 140.  Let's hope Jan can bring something worth getting hyped about because I have a bad feeling we will have a very warm and dry winter in 19-20 so if we fork this one, we can probly start thinking about 2+ years down the road.  :(

I still think interesting weather is possible out there until around 1/10, +/- a few days. Looks like the SSW/NAM downwell is going to be slower than initially modeled, so Arctic potential is lessening, but there could still be stormy/troughy episodes.

Mid-January to early February looks as hideous as ever to me, but who knows at this point. Ridging is likely based on history in such regimes, but predictability is very low right now.

Good chance this January will be better than last January, if only for the sake of irony.

A January thread created 5 days before January? I think it's fair to say this is the most anticipated January E V E R.

You weren't here last year at this time. Phil had said we had a real shot at another January 1950. THAT was the most anticipated January ever. I think this post was put up so early because people are tired of December.

Lol, I don’t recall saying that.

I was bullish, but I wasn’t delusional (IIRC).

I've been here since 2014 so I remember the "coldest January in years" comments quite well.

My comment was meant to be a bit tongue in check.  :P

In all seriousness, I think mid January could bring something special to the NW before things shift east.

Looks like Juneau and SE AK will be getting colder. My iPhone weather says Juneau will be getting colder than Haines... have a hard time beleiving that.

I have noticed that SEAK tends to get super cold prior to the blasts that Coastal WA gets. GFS showing -10c 850mb temps for Juneau in the 180h (semi believable) range. The wind changes from NE to SSW right at the peak cold temps. That is also pretty unusual. Will be fun to track this blast for the homeland while I hope it sets things up for a cold punch to WA. One can only hope... and post on weather forums...

That’s precisely what you predicted last year.

I never predicted 3 weeks of perpetual Arctic air. That would be absurd.

The Portland metro has only seen measurable snow in three Januaries in this decade (2012, 2016, 2017). Totally putrid. Even the sucky 2000s managed six (2000, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2009).

Just 2017 for the S valley. Even worse.

I think Eugene had some light measurable stuff in 2012 and 2016 as well. 1/2" or less.

Incorrect. I don’t see any measurable snow for EUG for those months and 15-16 was a complete dud in the central and s valley. We missed out on the PDX event.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!
