November 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Some pre-dawn ground fog in the valley this morning... you can see the tops of trees sticking up through the fog.

It's been like 60 degrees in the afternoon the last few days. Doesn't ski season usually not really get going until late November anyway?

 

Yeah, something like Nov 20th and on I believe is when winter really kicks in. My first traces in K-Falls average about the 15th.

Dew points are way up too. This morning was probably he last widespread freeze for a while.

We were up around the 5,000 ft level on the north side of Hood on Friday, and I was surprised how much snow there still was.

Meant to post this the other day. This is the glorious north face of Hood from the lower part of the Vista Ridge trail on Friday. That’s a nice and relatively unused trail system.

There she is in all her glory. I hiked to the top of Lost Lake Butte a few years ago. Stunning view from there too.

Thanksgiving is just such a beautiful landmark for opening the slopes. Really love boarding and or just knowing it's ready for me already.

That’s a very nice and also relatively unknown hike in that area. Especially with such a popular campground close by.

 

We had a good view of Laurence Lake from the lower Vista Ridge trail, at Owl Point. That’s one lake you never hear about too much, but it has a really nice campground. Just several miles out of Parkdale.

After a very dry October we are experiencing a drought inducing November. The region cries out for rain, but none arrives.

I still can't wrap my head around the fact that PDX has seen two top-5 cold months this year so far.

 

It's pretty amazing actually.  Did you see my post where I listed the years that had Feb and Oct both solidly cold?  A pretty good omen it appears.

It was one of the two most likely options.  The other was persistence.  In an amplified season like this persistence or reversal is usually the way to go.  The good news is there should be little flat line mediocrity.

No.  A reversal would be amplified trough to amplified ridge or amplified ridge to amplified trough.  My point was normal is the least likely.

If we are entering a new grand solar minimum, as a number of researchers are predicting, then long dry episodes during the wet season like we're seeing now may be more common. There is some evidence that the PNW climate was drier in the Little Ice Age, and +PNA may have been prevalent during the winter (along with -EPO).
