December 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

If anything happens in the lowlands it’ll be Feb 7th or later, per the SSW. If anything happens in the high desert of Oregon this winter, it’ll happen no earlier than 1/20. Lived here long enough to see what happens year to year. Not scientific just experience. Good luck all.

Whats your reasoning behind predicting a "backloaded" winter? I mean experience is king, just like elevation, but there has to be some sort of science behind this?

Believe me, with this solar minimum, you just might find yourself getting more than what you bargained for. Imagine, for a moment, being locked in your house because the snow plows literally cannot keep up with the snowfall and the temperature hovers in the teens and precipitation keeps coming and coming. Your driveway and road are piled waist high with snow and theres an ice dam on your roof causing a leak in your roof.....yeah 

 

Snow is all fun and games until you have to deal with it.

Was a fun day in Leavenworth, yesterday would have been much more magical than today’s slush fest but oh well!

 

At home here we are at .94” for the day, 3.89” for the month.

 

And I can confirm at 4:30pm it was all rain at the top of Stevens.

You didn't stay to see the lights on?  Anyway, glad you had fun, and glad that there was a decent amount of snow, slushy as it was.

Thought about it, but my winter night driving vision sucks anymore and I knew I would be facing a lot of water spray and oncoming headlights so I wanted to get at least part way home before dark. Next year we are going to stay a few days so we can enjoy the lightings!

Up to 0.86" here on the day, about 1.5" since yesterday afternoon. Allison Pass looks crazy right now, the snowed in semi provides a nice reference frame.

Good choice, glad you chose safety. Hope you do get the chance to stay a few days next year. Should be better weather next year.

 

Will you go mid week or weekend? If the weekend, Christmas lighting is fun, but very crowded. Also you need to start booking soon for hotels, at least by Sprimg. There are also house rentals too, not just hotels. Not kidding about booking early.

 

Mld week you would have an easier time finding spaces though still good to book fairly early. Many hotels have large tour busses that come mid week, as that is the only time they can have big groups stay, as weekends are so busy. Mid week does not have as many bells and whistles as weekends, but also less crowds and easier to find reservations. Exceot Christmas week, which is also crazy. I know some of the hotels so feel free to ask questions.
