I wasn't aware that we had been in a cold pattern the last few weeks.

 

And in a stunning upset, foggy inversions were voted less interesting to track than record rainstorms by literally everyone in the universe.

I value the personal experience of weather conditions over the “tracking” of them, but that’s just me.

That wouldn’t include an inversion under a discontinuous retrogression/-EAMT, though? I get the progression is often the other way around, but that needn’t be the case, especially this year.

No never. But I can remember many wet times transitioning to snow.

 

Fake cold and fog is our most boring weather. Seems or feels like we had a lot of it between 2000-2005.

January 1929 is probably one of the more favorable examples of us quickly transitioning from an extended fake cold pattern at midmonth to genuine cross-polar stuff and offshore blocking. Still took a few days and there was a little transition event with rain first. And it was also 90 years ago and our climate didn't totally suck yet.

0.74 so far today and raining still...should stop raining for the first time in 48 hours soon. Temp was 50 at midnight down to 43 now.

Well if you throw retrogression into the equation, then I agree people would choose that.

I have seen that happen several times before. Of course more often the ridge does not retrogress.

Really pleased with the rainfall in the Portland area since last night. At this point it’s probably more like an atmospheric creek than a river, but I’ll take it.

 

PDX is closing in on 2” since this event started on Wednesday.

 

A fair amount more here just to the NW. An inch today on top of 2.1" prior to that with the event. Just didn't cash in on the heavier rates that they got up north with the band as it first fired up along the coast, but have had impressively persistent light rainfall.

Again, I digress. Some people find winter rain enjoyable, and I will just have to learn to accept that.

I don’t think anyone here was cheering on warm rain events just the extremity of this rain event which did bring some good snow to the mountains and rain to the northwest which has been fairly dry lately and was a good benefit to the region in general. I think everyone on here wants a good snow and cold event during the winter.

Almost all of our really good, memorable winters have all of the above. Liking big storms with wind/valley rain/mountain snow AND liking cold/lowland snow doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive. If anything, they are both in keeping with the general theme of liking interesting, active winter weather around here.

I do not know your situation but my friend is in a wheel chair and can not walk but loves the snow so once a year I take him snowmobiling he just hangs on and I haul a**! Anything is possible my friend.

I do not know your situation but my friend is in a wheel chair and can not walk but loves the snow so once a year I take him snowmobiling he just hangs on and I haul a**! Anything is possible my friend.

Haven’t had a sub-freezing high temp here in almost 4 yrs. if we don’t have one this winter then we will be on the hook to have one next winter or it will be the longest stretch in EUG history without one. Longest is during the 96-03 “dark age” from Dec 99-Jan 03.
