June 2020 Weather Discussion for the PNW

ECMWF cut-off bias on full display for next weekend... it accidentally shows a decent weekend as a result.

GFS says that will not happen.    GFS will be right.     And the GEM (as a tie-breaker) sides with the GFS.

12Z ECMWF is just a painful tease... knowing the only way it works out is if it's not displaying it usually cut-off bias. And the chance of that is close to zero.

Hillsboro was actually 57% of average for spring using 1991-20 averages. The 54% is using the entire POR.

PDX got 5.43" which is 59% of average. McMinnville got 6.28" which is 75% of average. Aurora Airport got 6.67" which is 67% of the 1998-20 average (no data exists before 1998).

Hillsboro is normally the driest place in the Willamette Valley. It's actually quite similar to your area, it gets little precipitation in NW flow because of rainshadowing mountains to the west. This spring HIO was the driest place in Western Oregon that I know of north of the Rogue Valley.

For May only, you actually have to go all the way down to Red Bluff, CA to find anything drier west of the mountains (although that was mostly just rotten luck and southern OR got very lucky).

Monmouth/Independence is very dry too. Shadowed by Mary's Peak and tall Coast Range mtns to the west.

Rain has finally started here. Temp dropped some 8 degrees.

Wonder how much warmer and drier than average this month will ultimately end up despite all the bellyaching. Stay tuned!!

I just put my winter socks on.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Hillsboro seriously the driest in the valley?

When I lived there they weren't such a donut hole like it is now. :P

They used to get more t'storms, more wind, and very juicy spring rainfalls in Washington Co. compared to any of the SE metro.

Yeah, a while back Mark posted a nice map of average yearly rainfall totals for PDX Metro. Around Hillsboro is one of the driest spots in the area.

"The driest parts of the metro area are in the lowest elevations in the Tualatin Valley and along the Columbia River from Vancouver Lake to NE Portland. That includes the Hillsboro, Portland, and Vancouver airports. These areas typically average less than 38″ of rain each year. Another dry spot, although not quite as dry, is the northern Willamette Valley south of Wilsonville."

Well at least Wilsonville is even worse! So HIO isn't entirely hopeless.  :P

So far for June, PDX is at 0.66" and HIO is at 0.21".

Got a few very good showers in this location today though. For reference I live right near the line between Tigard and Beaverton. Looking forward to some nice warm weather Wednesday-Friday.

He said Wilsonville isn’t quite as dry. Map shows that too.

In the snow department, Wilsonville is rock bottom. My brother hasn't been in a single legitimate snowstorm, while Hillsboro has seen at least two in that span of time he's lived there.

Just finished a huge deluge here in Battle Ground.  3.79"/hour rainfall rate and it dropped 0.63" of rain in 15 minutes.  Now sitting at 1.16" for the DAY, easily my wettest June day on record.

d*mn and you guys probably are going to get more rain before midnight!
