Agreed.   It has felt quite normal with a slow step down rather than an abrupt change.   No really big storms or wind or extended wet or dry periods.  Pretty unremarkable and not memorable in any way but quite pleasant.

This is the 4th consecutive GFS Op run to surge cold, modified arctic air into eastern Washington. It would be nice to see some ensemble support. If you remember several days ago when the GEM/CMCE and ECMWF/EPS had been suggesting the possible cold pattern for 24-36 hours the GFS said NOPE!, and it was correct. Maybe it is seeing something with the pattern recognition Day 6-10 that the other model camps are not. Grasping at straws is a desperate move. It's all we have right now. Anyhow.

I always thought you liked 1988-89 the best.  No doubt that 1988-89 through 1992-93 stretch had some goodies.

1989 was by far the most prolific weather event I’ve experienced, but the winter itself was all that great. Heatwave 2021 will probably be the most anomalous event, but about a 48 hour stretch during the 1989 blast were other worldly.

Actually the December 1990 arctic blast was the most anomalous event edging out 2021.

Geeze...it's colder in the Puget Sound area than it is in much of NE Oregon tonight.  That is pretty rare to say the least.

I think he's more referencing the actual anomaly not duration.

June 2021 had back to back days of 25+ degree (+29 on the 28th) anomalies where December 1990 never saw a 25 degree anomaly on any day.

We did have the unusual run of cold nights in late October.  The longest run of sub 30 mins I've recorded in October.  That of course set the stage for the nice burst of fall color we had.

I'm just saying that IMO the progression hasn't felt very Ninoesque.

I actually had a -26 departure IMBY in Dec 1990.

00z GFS Day 8 (4-run trend) I would say that's pretty remarkable agreement for the GFS as usually after Day 6 it's a mess all over the place. Hmmm....

This has some potential to amount to something.  We'll have to wait and see.

I will never forget that either.  It was 14 degrees with snow falling sideways at 2PM on Feb 1 at my house.  Just incredible!

Someone in my FB group posted analysis comparing both events maybe from a 500mb perspective, but that concluded the December 1990 was a more extreme event than 2021. I'm trying to find the exact comment.

Huge potential for more dig back than currently being shown if that general pattern emerges.

At the 500mb level I have no doubt Dec 1990 was more extreme.  There were a lot of surface dynamics involved in that extreme heat event.

Dec 1968 is the most impressive modern day airmass iirc.

Not sure on what metric it would beat out June 2021. There are really no truly comparable events to that three day heatwave. There are many comparable events to 12/90 and several that trump its intensity.

Yeah when you’re looking strictly at air masses the 1990 event (I’d argue 1968 as well) stands out no doubt. There were a lot of low level players in June 2021. As for a straight two day anomaly standpoint though, the data doesn’t lie, it sticks out above the rest.
