November 2023 Weather in the PNW

Today I’m thankful for how decent the 12z GEFS looks in the mid to long range

Ended up with a mildish and kind of blah 52/42 spread yesterday. Mostly cloudy throughout, although some evening clearing allowed for a pre-midnight low.

Stayed pretty socked in overnight, but managed a low of 38 here. PDX hit the same number. It looks like VUO which is further west scored a freeze. They must have been just outside the cloud deck.

Lingering low clouds now and 42. Hopefully they can stick around for a bit and limit daytime heating, then we can clear out really good overnight for a nice hard freeze. Hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving!🍽 

Dropped to 32 here, and the sun is out now.

Looks like a nice crisp run coming up for us.

They're great if they are where they belong.

Palms don't do too well in this microclimate due to the bone dry (and sometimes cold) east wind we get at times during the winter.

The ECMWF is going for mid 20s for a good part of King County tomorrow night.  Solidly freezing mins for a week straight.

I’ve noticed the really hardy windmill palms scattered throughout the Portland metro, but once you get within 5-10 miles of the west end of the Gorge they disappear.

Just noticed that the little system the night before last put PDX over 5” for the month to date. Approaching 6” here. We’ll see if we can sneak another system in within the next week to add to that.

Thankful for the 12z ensemble mean showing high temps below freezing, and many ensembles showing snow! Up to 33.9 now, following a 10 AM low temp of 32.5! Happy Thanksgiving to all!

12Z EPS... agrees with the ECMWF on troughing in the mid range.   Seems to be trending back to farther offshore with the troughing after that.

I know I don’t participate as much on this side of the forum since the move to South Dakota last year but I still really enjoy keeping up with the happenings of PNW weather by following along in the background. 

I’ve come to realize that generally a good 500mb pattern for you guys is also a good one for me over here so I’m rooting for us both! Here’s to a winter filled with arctic outbreaks, feet of snow, and busses sliding around the hills of Seattle!

The 1965/66 El Niño also had a SSW warming event. Interesting enough, both 1965 and 1968 had early season SSW's.

Both winters performed well in the PNW, with 1968/69 obviously being the epic anomaly.

Aside from 1969-70, the 1968-1973 period could do no wrong, regardless of ENSO. 

Only topped by 1948-56 in that respect, which still had 1952-53.

Actually December 1974 had a huge snow event in the Seattle area as well.
