Found out yesterday that one of my nephews has officially caught the bugg. Proof that genetics in some is ABSOLUTELY a part weather nerdery. Can’t tell you how many fights with my old man ended with me storming out of the room and yelling “I’M SORRY I WAS BORN THIS WAY!”

It was a lot of fun sitting with him for about an hour and I gave him the run down on how to read models, soundings, meteograms, differences between ops/ensembles, model bias tendencies, etc. We did NOT touch on SSW’s though. You could tell he was seriously infected with the virus and the poor kid has a long road to recovery ahead of him in a warming climate. Reminded me of my grandpa and I as he definitely passed on a lot of geekery as he of would mesmerize me with stories of January 1969 and such. Nice to know there will be some new guard in the family though.

Don't forget about the GLAAM!!

Yikes, wave-2 transition is pathetic on 12z EPS even in members that go that route.

Odds of a “dud” are increasing for NW half of North America (if you’re hoping for a pattern reversal) assuming this isn’t a blip.

All according to plan. 🤌

I lived on the Greenland Ice Sheet for a month in Summer 2012 and it absolutely torched, record melt at the time. No summer ‘duds’ allowed, only winter.

What! That had to have been one hell of an experience. How long did you stay out there? What were you doing?

What a day! Out doing some yard stuff and it feels like April, not late December.

Definitely has a spring-like feel out there today... despite Andrew's protests from the gloomy WV.

My outside lights stay up until the end of March usually. Because…SNOW!
Tree will need to come down this week, it’s mighty dry.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

Looking at the satellite you would think we are about to be deluged.   But there isn't a rainy day (like yesterday) in sight.   Just a few showers at times over the next week.

53/44 at SEA with sun most of the day and light wind.    Maybe a little spring-like @SilverFallsAndrew?    Doesn't mean there won't be plenty of wintery days still ahead.

The winter solstice was a few days ago. Ease off the gas, sparky.

There are usually some spring like days near the summer solstice as well.   Such is the nature of our climate.    We almost always have some days in the 50s in both June and December.

I've been seeing 50s in the upper Midwest this month as well.

@Phil Is this a wave-2/split? Forgive me for my lack of knowledge in this area.

That’s a wave-2, yes.

Think of wave-1 as vortex shoved off the pole with anticyclone nosing in

Wave-2 split vortex, into 2 daughter vortices, with 2 anticyclones nosing in

Rarely you can have a wave-3. IIRC either 17/18 or 18/19 had 3 daughter vortices.

Bring that down to the 500mb level and we're golden!

Its been nuts over there.   My friends and family are mostly loving it... exception being my brother-in-law who is really into snowmobiling.

The GFS is all over another surge of warming at the 10mb level during week 2.  We just recently had a lesser SSW which has already left the PV fairly weak with -AO.

I stayed on the ice sheet in the summers of 2012, 2013, and 2014 for my grad school research. I flew into Kangerlussuaq by C-130 one year, other times I flew in from Denmark. There is a science support base in town, and then we’d helicopter our gear, our drill rig, and ourselves onto the ice sheet. We used hot water drilling to make boreholes through the ice, and then we’d drop in strings of various sensors with a logger at the surface. Let the ice refreeze and come back a year later to get the readings.

No contact on the ice besides an emergency sat phone, and it was mostly manual labor once on the ice. The melted ice was so pure that we could just have active power strips sitting in puddles. A very unique opportunity.

We didn’t, we were kinda our own group. We were NSF-funded but also oddly funded by a coalition of countries looking to use our research to determine the possibility of glaciers re-advancing and impacting buried nuclear waste long in the future.

Went up the Santiam canyon a bit today. Didn’t attempt to get to Daly Lake though we probably could have gotten there. Had my kids with me and didn’t tell anyone where we were going so it didn’t seem like a good idea. Still a nice wintry day. Kids brought back some snow.
