This was a weird one to me. Pretty anemic upper level support, but just a brutal low level airmass.

Looks like the low level cold is surging down the Oregon coast now behind the departing low. Florence was 52 earlier this evening and is now down to 34. Newport is now down to 28.

Crazy amounts of snow up here next week. Euro shows over 20” here from 2 separate storms.

Hopefully it verifies. Models seem to be coming into agreement so its a realistic possibility now but still far from a lock.

I have no complaints about this event. If we are going to restore PNW winters to the glory days these are the kind of events we need to have. Hopefully next winter we continue to build on this momentum.

23.6F for a high today after a low of 11.6F. So a couple degrees warmer than yesterday for both the high and the low, but it was still my 5th coldest day I've recorded on my station since 2008 (all of which have happened in the last 25 months). Currently 14.9F maybe heading for a low a degree or two colder (if I'm lucky). I'm hoping that I can stay below freezing for one more day tomorrow because it would be nice to have 3 subfreezing highs, but with mostly sunny conditions and moderating cold it might be a challenge.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the slight southerly trends in the models over the past day for the Tues/Wed storm. Still think it's going to manifest as quite a bit of cold rain, but at least there's a chance up here to get something other than cold temperatures.

Yeah this has to be about the coldest temp I’ve ever seen precip that wasn’t snow. Wild stuff.

Glad to see Corvallis area didn’t get iced as bad as I thought it would. Still glad I came up here.

That's a long answer, many variables.

Much better chance of snow if it comes in below Seattle even if just by a few miles

Could anything more dynamic be in play for east siders at 800+ft, or is the airmass pretty warm throughout and not susceptible to small elevation differences?

Played out about how I expected. Had a brief period of icy snow to begin but then it changed to sleet and there was no turning back. The one disappointment was that we didn’t get any wrap around precip from the deformation band to the north. I think the mid-levels were cold enough to support snow at that point but oh well.

The wind and cold certainly delivered in an epic way. Sat at 13F all day with absolutely insane east wind gusts. Took a walk and there were 5 trees down within a 0.5-mile radius. Trees were creaking all day. As Mark said this will be remembered for the damaging winds and bitter low-level cold, not the sleet storm.

21F and freezing rain still coming down. Would’ve been about 2 feet of snow if the upper levels had worked out.

The snowless January curse lives on. None since 2017. Without looking at ACIS, I’m going to assume 7 years is one of the longest stretches without January snow for here.

In any event, hopefully we will have a sub-freezing high tomorrow.

I have never seen so much ice accumulation on the roads. I hear chainsaws in the distance like crazy too. Along with the crackling of branches.

10-20 percent chance maybe less

I’d go with a 30% chance based off the ensembles and feeling optimistic that the Seattle area can get something out of this.

Sitting at 15 here with a steady freezing drizzle. Now down to 14.
