February 2024 Weather in the PNW

Recommended Posts

Snow is dumping pretty good, finally down to 31 degrees. We wasted too much of our precip on rain, but atleast we still should be able to get atleast 4 inches

31 and snowing currently. Looks like this one is going to be a @High Desert Mat? and @DareDuck special. 2-3 degrees cooler in Bend and Remond than it is in Sunriver, and yall are getting more precip. Oh well, 9 times out of 10 we get more snow so it doesn't matter much this time, atleast we'll probably still be able to get a few inches.

Looks amazing in Sisters!

I’m on the south side of town so we also wasted some precip before it could stick. Snowing heavily and sticking now though. Little less than an inch so far. Closing in on 30” for the season.

Guess some people really like traffic lights turning red in their face and sitting waiting despite there being no traffic on the other street. I for one like roundabouts.

I’m a big fan of them. We have a ton here so the transplants that aren’t used to them like to complain. That use to just be a 4 way with cross traffic having to stop. They changed it to a roundabout and a bunch of people threw a fit. It’s much safer to cross now and it really doesn’t slow you down much.

28/18 that day.  Perfectly tolerable temperatures for palm trees.  Also snow is a great insulator and there was plenty of it on the ground.  😊

Trachycarpus fortunei (windmill palm) can handle more extreme cold than a lot of the typical landscaping here. There are some growing in Bulgaria that have survived temperatures down to -17F. My palms breezed through the coldest day in decades this past January (average temperature 14F with brutal winds). In contrast several of our rhododendrons were freeze-dried to a crisp and might not survive. The remaining cordylines in the area were wiped out to the ground, but most were wiped out in previous years as they have hard 18F tolerance range. I've also noticed some very large eucalyptus trees that look completely dead, some in various precarious spots near the road.

From 10:40-11:30 our temp dropped 4 degrees thanks to North wind. 27 now, about an inch and a half of fresh snow with more on the way.

Good night!

Temp is 28 with moderate snow with about an inch new on top of yesterdays 5 which had mostly melted today. Expecting it to snow through the night til about dawn or so. Local Mets say about 4-8”. Shouldn’t go anywhere the next few days as high temps struggle to reach freezing both days, except for the usual streets and blacktops due to solar heating. Nice little winter over considering it’s an El Niño. About to hit my seasonal average of 24”.

I have a feeling about next winter. With us plunging into a moderate La Niña (most likely) after this El Niño. Hoping for a +QBO to go with it. Phil explained it earlier but didn’t get all the lingo. So to anyone else, can they predict a qbo out to next winter like they do enso?

QBO actually easier to project than ENSO at this range. It’s almost like a heartbeat in the tropical stratosphere.

I think we’ve been stuck under a mountain wave or quasi-stationary eddy tonight. Have been getting cyclical 40-50mph gusts while longitudinally-adjacent areas are roughly half that. And forecast was for 20mph. I think it’s finally calming down now, though.

Weird how modest terrain features can mess with air flow under nocturnal boundary layer thermodynamic conditions.

This sums it up pretty nicely how the QBO and SSW’s correlate.

At the very end they hint at the crux of the issue.

It’s not so much the QBO by itself, rather its state dependent effects via interaction with with climate drivers such as ENSO, solar, etc.

Niña/+QBO (all else being equal) is the best combo for cold/snow in the PNW (while niño/+QBO is the worst).

But all else is not equal, and there are ways to short circuit the relationship. Example: +IOD/unusual IPWP structure during 1999/00 circumvented the typical Niña/+QBO NPAC High connection.
