March 2024 Weather in the PNW

Recommended Posts

What were the years 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 enso type? I know ‘15-‘16 was an El Niño but the year before? Just trying to correlate multi Nino years that go into a La Niña. I’m aware that we had a multi Nina and then went into a El Niño and now heading back to a La Niña. Looking for any possible correlations to ‘16-‘17. Great year for winter weather all around.

Yeah I think because of how cold/troughy that spring was, many assumed it would continue into summer given -ENSO. I thought it might.

The large 4CH was well-predicted, though. Yet it still ended up overperforming even the most extreme projections, significantly influencing the weather in BC/PNW even into August. Same with 2021. Basically the entire western half of the lower-48 ended up roasting and burning both years.

Good news is this year’s 4CH shouldn’t be nearly as bloated. But exactly how prominent it becomes will partially hinge on how quickly westerly shear descends in the tropical stratosphere (which cannot be determined just yet). So it’s a waiting game for now.

Weak El Niño though it was IPWP/WPAC forcing that dominated through the winter.

Unless ENSO is strong, peripheral/external forcings are equally if not more important. 2014/15 and 2019/20 had almost the same ONI, but very different winter patterns because tropical forcing/general circulation outside ENSO were so different.

For OLM, 2021, 2015, 1967, and 1958 were all hotter. Probably missing one or two others.

Wildfires are supposed to be a west coast/PNW problem. Why are they suddenly a thing here?

This never used to happen. March is always dry and windy. Have never seen the entire Shenandoah Valley spontaneously combust like this. Breaks my D**n heart.

The NWS out there says it’s not that uncommon. Good news though, looks like rain is coming on Friday that should help with the wildfires.

“According to NWS offices in Washington, D.C. and Blacksburg, Virginia, the amount of fire activity is not unprecedented when compared to previous firestorms over the last few decades.

Widespread rains are expected to drench the region on Friday but not before another dry day, with relative humidity values of between 10% and 20% on Thursday.”

Hey all, just wanted to remind you all to take care of your self everyday.  We had the biggest scare of our lives on Tuesday morning, we thought I was having a heart attack, heart rate approaching 200 bpm, heavy breathing, chest pain... it ended up not being one after a 911 call, ambulance ride and hours of tests in the ER.  Apparently my body has been fighting some stuff since I got over covid in February that I was not aware of and the previous day I had a stomach bug that severely dehydrated me even though I was pounding water to offset it, all that along with life stress and work stress caught up with me and I had a major anxiety attack that mimicked a heart attack, plus I have a little pneumonia going on as well that i was not aware of.  I am on a massive load of antibiotics and on a get as much rest as possible regime through the weeken.  It was scary, my wife and daughter handled everything like champions, but god D**n, I was so effing scared.

Be awesome  weirdos, today was a nice day of drizzle and temps in the 50's.

GEEEZEEEE!  Scary!  Glad you are okay.  When I had my stroke I was lucky enough that my sister was close by, I was sort of denying it, but super glad I went to the hospital!  Here's hoping for rapid improvement!

If it had happened 10 minutes later I would have been home alone without a way to dial 911, my fingers were locked and contorted, even though  it wasn't a heart attack the medics said that if they hadn't gotten there as soon as they did my heart rate would have continued to rise and I most likely would have went  in to cardiac arrest, I am so thankful things worked out the way they did, don't want it to happen again.

Glad you are still with us! Hopefully the antibiotics kick the remnants of the crud quickly. I hear ya, it’s scary as hell. In late January I had a less extreme version of that happen. For me it turned out to be purely stress and lack of sleep. I tell ya, stop by the busy walk in clinic and tell them you are having chest pains radiating to your elbow and a rapid pulse, and you are in a room in under 2 minutes getting the work over!

There was no way my wife was gonna try to drive me considering my condition at the time lol, we have a fire station a block away, they were here in our house in less than 3 minutes of her dialing 911, but you are right, if you show up with the right symptoms you can skip to the head of the line at   some clinics.

Nah. That winter was okayish for the most part but was mostly separate small little events that only added up to a Slushy Inch each time for the most part here. The cold air bled so slowly in up here with all the backdoor action that the snow would melt off before it got cold enough to stick around.

My wife's friend used to be one of the assistant coaches at WSU when Ernie Kent was there. He went to UO and played for Kent there. He got us some nice tix a few years ago when the Cougs were in town. Obviously WSU had to get rid of Kent to find success. Last I heard her friend was teaching school and coaching ball in the Portland area. Nice guy, almost a full foot taller than me.
