April 2024 Weather in the PNW

Recommended Posts

Hoping to have 2-3” by morning. Snow wasn’t supposed to start for a few hours. Hoping the main band waits until 2-6am to maximize cooling. This is now the 7th straight month with at least non sticking snow.

Already down to 35 degrees. I’m surprised Jim isn’t back for a brief off season appearance.

Elevation 580’ Location a few miles east of I-5 on the Snohomish Co side of the Snohomish/Skagit border. I love snow/cold AND sun/warmth!

One could argue many things. Whether they are worthwhile arguments is often up for debate ;)

We definitely aren’t due for May heat down here. Had our hottest May on record in 2018 then beat it again just last year. Second hottest in 2019. Also had 5/6 days in a row in the 90s down here the middle of last May which was totally unprecedented. Just like the eight days in a row of 70+ mid April 2021, the historic heat with five consecutive 70+ the middle of this March, etc etc ad nauseum.

Looks like it will be in the upper 60s to low 70s when we visit family there next week. Will just miss the cold/snow.

PDX stats, but those sound much worse than when you look outside the heat box.

None of those years were top 5 warm Mays at KVUO. Same story when you look at Battle Ground. 2023 was #5, but 2018 and 2019 weren't close. Ditto for Forest Grove.

Yes, there have definitely been some significant May heatwaves the past decade...but as is usually the case, looking only at PDX stats really exaggerates the historical significance.

I am I drunk or did we not already do that last year?

Edit: 86/89/88 from the 13th through the 15th. Close enough by all metrics except for actually reaching the milemarker itself.

Actually has been a historically decent indicator of a reasonable or cool summer. You could also toss in the early June 1955 heatwave which produced Seattle's earliest triple Ds on record.

That mini-correlation would probably cease to be relevant in today's base state, though.

GFS is looking pretty bleh for the eclipse, GEM is decent. I originally had reservations in Texas, then I got backup reservations in Arkansas, and now I'm thinking I might have to go to Missouri. How's the 00z ecmwf cloud cover map?

Probably will still end up being better than the Mariners. Wish Oregon would take them off our hands.

Would love to have a team come to Portland but it’ll never happen. And if it did please not the Mariners 😂

They’ll be fine tho, long season. Still think their rotation is legit.

Ended up with a 52/42 day yesterday. Stayed decently chilly despite showers being few and far between, and lots of bright spots in the clouds and even some sunbreaks.

Scored a low of 37 here with skies clearing some. Now just 40 with light rain. Showers are rotating in from the NE. Could be a chilly day.

The Canadian today was a Jesse special. Circumvents any ridging and forces down some clippy troughs and chilly NW flow in the long range. One way to thread the needle to avoid a heatwave mid month.

GEM has significantly moved toward the ridgy scenario over the last 2 runs since your post... including the new 12Z run coming out now.   Very different than its 12Z run yesterday.    But that does not mean there is a "heatwave" coming either.
