It's beginning to appear we might transition straight from -EPO to -PNA.  Might not be much of a window for warm rain in there.

Currently 22F. Glad to be back home after driving through a very foggy/low visibility Hwy 95 in Idaho.

HIghest snow total (per event): 5.8 inches total 1/11/24 - 1/12/24.

Most recent accumulation (non trace): 0.20 inches on 2/26/24

Days with  trace or more snowfall: 12/01/23 (0.60), 1/8/24 (1.0), 1/10/24 (3.5), 1/11/23 (3.5 inches with Thundersnow; separate event from prior day), 1/12/24 (2.30). 1/14/24 (T), 1/17/24 (1.20 inches), 1/18/24 (1.5 inches), 1/19/24 (0.20), 2/09/24 (0.30), 2/26/24 (0.20-mainly graupel), 4/5/24 (T)

First Freeze: 10/27/2023

Last Sub freezing Day: 1/20/24 (12th) (8 days in a row from 1/12/24-1/20/24)

Coldest low: -12F (!!!!!!!!) (1/12/24)

Last White Christmas: 2022 at my location (on ground)

That might cut back on potential mins a bit tonight.  The models show them really thinning out by the time they reach the Seattle area.  Tomorrow night looks totally clear throughout.

It shows it getting wetter though.  From what I can tell the warm rain window might be short though.  Already signs of new blocking building further off the coast late in week 2.

The ECMWF indicates a couple of pretty chilly inversion days after we get brushed by the cold shot going east of us.

I've crunched the numbers back to 1980 and SEA came in with the second coldest first third of November since then and 2003 was the coldest.  Looks like they have a real shot at coming in for coldest first half.  The only real competition are 1985, 2000,and 2003.  So back to 1980 the coldest three for coldest first 10 days are.

1. 2003 = 41.6

2. 2022 = 42.5

3. 2017 = 43.6

The coldest 3 for first half are.

2003 = 43.2

1985 = 43.4

2000 = 43.4

I checked 1955 and it came in with 38.2 for the first half.

I plan on looking at everything back to 1950 in the coming days.

A chilly 28 here now.  Having nights with temps below freezing for 10 or more hours this time of year is definitely cold.  People are trying to compare this to a winter cold snap and it's not realistic to do so.

Similar over here. Cloudy and 40F this morning.  Shawnigan Lake official has had only 3 freezes this month.  I think I have had a couple more though.  November is still running -4.7F to date though. So fairly chilly 🥶

      Middle East Conflict of 2023-2024

      Well, I forgot to update this little development. A big nothingburger thankfully in terms of conflict even if it was very out of the ordinary. But it was a wakeup call to Israel. I am reading that Iran spent some $60 million in it's launch of it's assortment of cannon fodder. I use that term because Iran was sending a message and not its good stuff, as any research would show. The response cost? About $3 billion! The fact that the U.S., Israel, and Jordan all participated in intercepting the low cost drones and missiles and still a few managed to strike Israeli land is one hand a testament to the effectiveness of high tech interception, BUT it is also a sobering reality for the U.S. and Israel that if Iran wanted to play hardball, it would be mass destruction in Israel. That is very unlikely. What is very likely; however, is the fact that it is a confirmation to Iran that there is a massive cost/benefit in its favor regarding its effectiveness of its long game: proxy war and skirmishes. It's draining Israeli money and costing U.S. taxpayer money. Israel needs to get this through their heads: They are on borrowed time in terms of what the global community will tolerate - act accordingly.
