October 2019 Weather Discussion for the PNW

Recommended Posts

Some crazy cold minimums this morning in Wyoming:

-26 at Big Piney (prev. Oct record -15 in 1971)

-25 at Old Faithful (prev. Oct record -11 in 1991)

-22 at Saratoga (prev. Oct record -8 in 1972)

-20 at Rawlins Airport (prev. Oct record -7 in 1972)

In Idaho, -17 this morning at Island Park is a preliminary state record for October. The listed record is -16 at Big Springs in 1917. Island Park had also set the Idaho state record low for pre-10/15 readings when they fell to -3 in the earlier cold wave around the 10th this month.

That is, in fact, the greatest departure I have ever seen on a NWS daily climate report.

Believe it or not, back on March 4th of this year the Bozeman Airport had a -53.7 degree departure with a -4/-39 day.

It's really remarkable and unheard of to see two historic air masses during the same year during transition season (Spring/Fall) putting out those massive temp departures.

Missed the record by a couple degrees but apparently Roseburg and several places in the Umpqua Basin set records, breaking the previous marks...from 2002.

The parallels are pretty staggering and worrisome going forward.

This year is a moderate El Niño, strong +PDO, and solar maximum, right?

When we were seeing cold earlier in the month and in late September, during times when years that went to have great winters saw cold, you were worried then too. ;)

Really this fall has been nothing like 2002. October 2002 was fairly torchy leading up to the late month events, this one will end up the coldest in decades. Not to mention the robust Niño that year.

-21 at Copper Basin and -20 at Fairfield. Fairfield is a town in Camas County, ID and may go down as the new Oct state record low. -18 at Island Park. Surprisingly Stanley didn't post anything under -10...perhaps no snow cover over there.

-29 at Old Faithful Lodge (new station) while the Ranger Station fell to -25.

Looks like Baker City set a daily record and came 1 degree from tying the October record. It also appears La Grande shattered their monthly record.

It's a bit ironic, when last winter you were arguing to the end that it was going to be neutral, and it ended up being a weak Nino. The inverse of this year, perhaps. :)

I didn’t think last year would pull it off, but I was open to the possibility. This year would be somewhat more borderline but the system state does favor it.

The Saratoga 4N COOP bottomed out at -29 this morning. Unbelievable.
