Phil
It’s a tough call on Mid-Feb even with a hostile stratosphere, because the coming swing in the AAM budget is real and could be one of the largest ever observed in the given time interval (both in terms of the amplitude and the duration of that derivative) so there’s room for some bottom-up amplification as mass is displaced and wavetrains get the wrench. Mid-Feb isn’t like mid-Jan. Jan is peak coupling season. That’s ending as we speak. 1 Quote Live Weather Cam: https://www.youtube.com/live/KxlIo8-KVpc?si=xKLCFYWbZieAfyh6 PWS Wunderground https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KMDBETHE62 PWS CWOP/NOAA: https://www.weather.gov/wrh/timeseries?site=F3819&hours=

Phil
Then again, I ignored the strat/TPV coupling in January, and what could have been the most epic blast in many decades ended up bottled inside the stacked vortex with some minor leakage south of the border. I suppose with the strat vortex stretched/bumped into Eurasia there’s a tilt present w/ potential for baroclinic instability in the structure? I think something can still happen as long as the system doesn’t trend increasingly baratropic —> stable w/ equatorward EP fluxes during that critical window. Skagit Weather
It looks like it could be quite windy up in the North Interior tomorrow. Phil
It’s tough to forecast weeks/months in advance and target windows of opportunity even without making calls as to whether they will work out or not. Sometimes the outcome is cool NW flow with the cold air stuck in Canada. Sometimes the GOA/AK ridge is too close (especially if it’s a very amplified pattern). In more complex scenarios involving nonlinear/threshold-determined princesses/dynamics, the pattern evolution itself can diverge and it can truly be a “busted forecast” with a different pattern altogether. And then, sometimes, it works out beautifully.
