September 2023 Weather in the PNW

Hadn’t been paying until now but the maples are beginning to turn for my area. Based on the colors, has to be around a few days to a week already. The trees are quite beautiful when they’re half turned (orange, red) and half still fully green. 

Quite interesting because they’re typically late to come in during the spring and the first to turn early Sept.

There’s a cool shore-parallel lake effect drizzle band on the north end of Lake Washington this morning. Not sure I’ve ever seen that before, especially in warm season.

SEA has picked up another .06 this morning... very nice.

My phone forecast shows some beautiful September weather ahead.    Next weekend might end up a little warmer than shown now based on model trends.

Not sure how accurate the precip map is on the SEA NWS site... but looks accurate for my area.   The central and north Cascades got a good soaking since yesterday.    This front was definitely more impressive than I was anticipating.

Yes. Not the best photo because the glare was strong around noon yesterday but the maples in Lewiston always start first and usually in the first week or two of September. They are always the first to change colors.

PDX averages 47/36 in December and January yet it can literally go weeks on end without a single freeze in the dead of winter.

There are actually a couple of olive farms in western Oregon! Durant Olive Mill is probably the best known one, it’s right off 99W.

But your summers are highly variable while ours aren’t. It balances out in that respect.

Ours are doing surprisingly well despite getting a late start this year because of the move in March. Getting the soil ready was a real pain. The chili are coming in nicely and the fall harvest crops are on schedule.

In beautiful Bellingham now.   Quite sunny up here.   Haven't been up here since before our MN trip.   Definitely can tell the fall green up is in progress up here too.   Lawns in my parents' neighborhood that were burnt brown in late July are turning green again.

Up north in whatcom county and SW BC has gotten more frequent rains than Puget sound. We’ve had a few light rainfalls…but still would need a lot more to see the grass turn green. We’ve had about 0.3” of rain in the last 2 weeks.

 @Chewbacca Defense lives very close to my parents house and I remember he reported over an inch of rain with one of the convective events in August and really good soaking last night as well.   I think there have been a couple other rain events up here too.  It seems like the fall green up is happening from Everett northward and from 405 eastward based on what I have seen.

Drove by Tim's house today on the way to hike to Snow Lake.

Beautiful overcast morning with light rain and mist.  What a wonderful hike.  Could not see much of the lake this time around but was still a good time.

The crowds that were arriving were like ants marching to a pic nic basket.

No green up here yet.  I’d say the last impactful rainfall was the middle of July. Everything else has just been enough to keep the dust down.  Most of southern BC is in an extreme drought currently.

@Rubus Leucodermis has done much better than your area it seems.    And pretty sure western WA is in drought too and definitely my area.    Fall green up does not mean there is no drought.  My area has both at the same time.

All of Western WA and pretty much all of Western OR are at least in moderate drought. Even some extreme drought in Whatcom and Skagit counties and even in northern Snohomish county.

It's been a crazy dry year in the central Cascade foothills.      Cold and dry and then warm and dry.   Not sure we can get out of drought this fall even if it's very wet.

I’m sure he has. The island is much drier especially in the spring and summer. 
 

The late season dryness was a big contributor to the drought this summer.  And the quick flip to winter was the kiss of death for interior and northern areas.  The ground froze up before any of the typical fall rains could soak in.

I just got back from a weekend road trip, and it's spotty. Some areas are still quite dry, others have benefited from moisture since late August.

Boston Bar was pretty dry. Not surprisingly, Lytton and Lillooet looked dry. Quite smoky in Lillooet, but surprisingly little smoke in Lytton or Boston Bar despite the Kookipi Creek Fire nearby. The area around Duffey Lake has been getting rain. Pemberton and Whistler still were for the most part dry. Took a short hike to the old train wreck at Whistler and the forest was still dry and dusty.

Felt a little silly to see the signs for the campfire ban at the rec site near Duffey Lake (where it rained much of yesterday afternoon), but many (most, even) areas are still quite parched.

My lawn is a disaster.    Needs to be re-seeded.    Didn't water grass all all this summer.    It never recovered from last summer.

We have long term drought issues now.   Recent wetness helps but long way to go.

We are very lucky around our place as there have been very little in the way of Yellowjacket activity, however almost everywhere else I have been like local parks, etc they are just everywhere and very pissed off! More so than past years it seems like.

Quite the consistent warming trend over the next 7-14 days. Lots of 70s in our future. No sign of the first real widespread rain. Seems like it’s going to be a fairly typical year with that coming late in September. Unless we have a repeat of last year.

I got stung on my tongue while we were camping.  Had one in my drink and didn’t know it.  I used to be highly allergic to them and had to go to the hospital if I got stung.  Luckily the venom immunotherapy I paid for was successful.  Decent chance that sting would have killed me years ago.
