I can't either. I don't know how people do it. My mortgage is about what a studio apartment rents for a month in Silverton ($1400 including insurance and property tax), and I know our prices are significantly lower than the Puget Sound region.

I purchased my place in 2004 for 164K, 2.5 acres and very private. My Mortage is 1200 per month and it would sell for 800k on the market now. Just NUTS!

With the price of everything else I don't even know how I would make it if I had a rent/mortgage around $3K a month.

I can tell you no kids and dual income is the only way that works.  Any other situation and we'd probably be back east in some red state backwater.

Our mortgage is around $4K and with current housing prices/rates it would be closer to $6,500.

Dual income, one kid. Never seriously considered a second kid, otherwise I would be paying nearly $5K/month in daycare costs!

I know someone who bought a house in Seattle as a grad student back in 2010ish. His income was around 25K/year at that time as a researcher for the university. He lives in Tacoma now and rents it out.

That's what I would imagine. With as many kids as I have, there is just no way. I recognize how fortunate I was to buy at the right time AND manage to hang on to the home through my divorce 8 years ago.

We are fortunate in that my in laws will provide child care pretty much whenever at no cost. They are pretty chill too, so its no trouble. My wife kind of works, but doesn't really have any interest in work or a career. The only reason she really works is to get out of the house and because her employer offers great health insurance which covers all of us. Which saves quite a bit of money.

Christ, our rent is $1500 and does not include water/garbage which is spendy and its on a tiny property.

There was a FB feed up here in one of the Bellingham community pages last week where someone moving to the area was trying to get a sense of the rental market.  I was shocked to see someone not too far from me paying about $3,500 per month for a 2,200 sq ft house.  I don't think that included any utilities.  Granted, its in a "nice" neighborhood, but it doesn't have a mountain, bay or lake view.  A lot of home rentals were in the $2,500 to $2,800 range, and a studio apartment goes for at least $1,500-$1,800 in town.....just crazy!

We pay $1,800 for our mortgage, insurance and property taxes for a 2,800 sq ft house.  Granted, we got in when the market was very low (2013) and we refinanced to a 2.24% interest rate in 2022, but still....

The other half of the "crazy" equation, we bought this house for $330k in 2013, and it was valued at $880k at one point last year.  It has settled to a more "pedestrian" $680k this year.

A studio in Silverton, OR rents for $1400/mo? That’s insane!

Almost as bad as what one rents for in Vancouver these days (CAD $2450 = USD $1775).

It's called clown range for a reason.

It's crazy how prices in the smaller cities/towns have caught up to the big cities.

There's a lot to like about Bellingham but not for those prices!!!

I am truly shocked that studios there now rent for almost as much as they do here, once one applies currency conversions.

I would pay CAD $1000/mo more in rent for my current place if I hadn’t first signed a lease during the pandemic and since benefited from rent control (and Vancouver wasn’t exactly a low-cost city in 2021). I hear what rentals go for these days and I can’t believe it.

One of the smartest guys I worked with in grad school did his dissertation on ENSO/climate change (in addition to like 10 other topics he worked on). His research suggested that -ENSO might become more common than +ENSO as the planet warms. I can't remember what the mechanism was...

Officially I think it's still an open research question, but I'm sure this crowd would hope that his research is correct.

Astoria, Seaside, and Cannon Beach are true gems to go to. Last went there maybe 3 years ago with the fam and I fully intend on coming back, this time by myself.

Funny, I've driven to the coast and back, Rainier and back in a day.  Just have to get out.  After my stroke, just a reminder that you never know.

Meanwhile, pouring rain here at home and down to 43, my low for the day.  0.91" yesterday and up to 0.63" for today.

I love going out to the Oregon Coast for day trips, either Tillamook Bay, Cannon Beach or Seaside. About half of them are just spontaneous trips where I just need to get away. If the Puget Sound was a little closer I’d definitely go up there more often. It’s so beautiful with all the different unique Waterways you guys have up there. It almost feels like your near the ocean which I love.

Speaking of round trip in a day. I watched a Dateline once where a lady drove from Florida to New Jersey and back to kill her mother in law.

well that's a missed opportunity.  an 1" of precip and little to no snow.  guess it's going to be mid to late November before we have our first measurable snow this year.  I kinda figured it would be late.  average first here is like 11/13 or so
