The PV basically parks itself beside California, you'd be getting actual Arctic outflow into the valleys down there. This could be a significant palm tree killer down there if it verified.

I think temps in the 20s with a moderate amount of snow is perfect.   No melting but also no pipes bursting or roofs collapsing.   All the good with none of the bad.  👍

Something like 1928-29 or 1936-37.  Great cold winters with none of the nasty crap.

Could be some very low windchills in the NW with strong easterly winds out of valleys that don't typically get intense outflow due to the orientation of the typical Arctic airmass.

I mean we basically had a subtropical high over the Canadian arctic much of December. Would balance things out a little to have the PV parked over Plumas County, California for a couple days.

If we get a real legit arctic blast some snow is to be expected but some of these end up dry. Not saying this will, but a major blast will probably not favor outflow areas at least once the offshore flow really cranks.

I'm referring to my paintbrush of looking down the road and the inevitable scouring the entrenched cold via overrunning

It would take at minimum two systems to scour out just the valley, but PDX metro the east winds would keep PDX in the deep freezer temps would be even colder than what the Euro shows. It could take 5-7 days, maybe longer? Who knows.

I was just about to share this and say the same thing! Maybe the NBM isn't so radical with the temps.

Most Mets like to use that term. It was flung around wildly in the 90’s

The balancing things out argument would be right for once.

Any Fraser winds with this? Wondering about wind chill up in Bellingham and whether I need to prepare my kiddo up at Western. Has been a really mild fall up there so far, and she has no idea about those Fraser winds.

Having lived in Bellingham from 1984 through 2013, those winds are no joke, though the worst winds are north of town, especially north of the Smith road.  It may keep Bellingham from getting a lot of snow, but it feels pretty nasty when it's that cold and the wind is blowing.  I'm guessing a lot of kids are wearing shorts these days.  They may be in for a rude awakening.

It’s mocking us with that face! Looks good. I haven’t seen comparisons to the 12z but it looks solid.

Technically it's always true. Even Jan 1950 was "modified" from its Arctic source.

Kinda a dumb term, though.
