Bit "warmer tonight" with it being 3F instead of negatives at this time of night. As mentioned, bit concerned that the warm nose could cause mix/zr at my location later in the weekend esp after getting new snow.

Those of you in the willamette valley might wanna keep an eye on this. Seems like it's overpreforming what forecast called for, you could get some midnight snow. Seems like it atleast has some precip, lack of radar could be showing it weaker then it is.COD-GOES-West-subregional-Oregon.truecolor.20240114.053117-overmap-barsnone.thumb.gif.d103fe6a867851a3856d8a23d7d881d1.gifCOD-GOES-West-subregional-Oregon.radar.20240114.052000.gif-overmap-barsnone.thumb.gif.d311cb072c7ce2f5712f3b896d1a177f.gif

Light freezing rain continues. 21 degrees. It's laughable how bad the NWS screwed up the forecast down here. Anyway, Eugene is one frozen ice cube. We were fortunate enough that much of the precip today was sleet opposed to ZR. Also, for whatever reason, really cold ZR doesn't stick to tree branches as much as 31 degree ZR does. Tree damage was actually pretty limited. However, on flat surfaces, I basically have 1.5" of frozen glacial ice. This will take forever to melt out. My car ain't going anywhere soon.

About 4" even here. Great storm, though it was a little heavier just to my north.

I actually moved back to Clark County in 2015. So my name is kind of an ancient artifact at this point but I've just been too lazy to change it.

Been fascinating to watch the grid frequency drop as load picks up. A solid day measuring under 59.90 Hz is on par with some of our warmer days in the summer.

Just now from Avista

Dear Customer,

Last night, we asked that you conserve natural gas usage due to a mechanical issue experienced north of our service territory by one of Avista’s natural gas suppliers, TC Energy (formerly TransCanada Corporation). That issue has been resolved, and customer conservation was key to stabilizing the system as it was being fixed. However, we continue to see record-low temperatures and increased energy use throughout the region creating new supply constraints.

For the next 12 hours, Avista is requesting all customers to continue to conserve energy, both natural gas and electricity, by considering these steps if you haven’t already:

  • Lower your thermostat to a point you can comfortably and safely manage
  • Unplug anything not being used
  • Reduce the use of washing machines and dryers
  • Reduce the use of dishwashers
  • Turn off and/or unplug lights that aren't being used
  • Restrict heat by shutting doors to unused rooms
  • Adjust the temperature on your water heater to 120 degrees
  • Take shorter showers
  • Keep heated air inside by blocking air leaks
  • Close curtains and blinds
  • Place a rolled-up towel at the base of exterior doors
  • Turn bathroom, kitchen and other ventilation fans off (if not needed)
  • Close chimney flue when fireplace is not in use
  • Cover wall or window AC unites with a blanket
  • Close garage door if attached to home
  • Remove any furniture or other items blocking air vents or heaters
These steps will help keep the natural gas and electric transmission and distribution systems stable.

We are working around the clock to ensure you and all our customers have the energy needed to stay warm and safe.

Based on what I saw on social media many in PDX proper were pretty sad about the lack of epic snowfall.

Most of them were probably younger and had no clue how rare it is to snow like it did at those temps and wind.

We come from the land of the ice and snow.

Coldest high since 1990 is a lot more impressive than a few inches of snow.

Down here it was always fake cold, hence the multiple inches of sleet.
