December 2020 Weather Observations for the PNW

Omegaraptor

Recommended Posts

Ended Nov with the same amount of snow as Nov 2018. If that's an analog maybe February will be the regions biggest producer for snow.

Also added the new season to my sig; condensed the last couple to the top so its not so long.

And it's not gonna be headed this way anytime soon. The days of 1990-style blasts are over for our lifetimes.

There will most likely still be some marginal events, and maybe some after 2-3 weeks or so. But I lived through the 1996-2003 snowless wasteland, so I've seen this movie before. Get psyched for a nina and then...nothing. Like 1999-2000.

Got down to about 35 this morning, frost on the rooftops but not on the cars.

I take it the aurora was a bust last night?  I checked a couple of sites before I went to bed and didn't look like much was happening.

There were a couple times over the years it was viewable from my place; but I'm never up late enough to catch it.

It's pretty rare in Oregon to see it, wouldn't surprise me if it didn't happen.

I did not see anything when I want out to look. And then it got cloudy.

As of 12/10 I'm behind like two-thirds of the winters I experienced here. Late starts can happen of course but just an observation. I know the cascades performed a lot better than the east sides.

Euro is a good run if you want Central Valley temperatures in the Willamette Valley and 6500’+ snow levels.

Oh wah. Temps are pretty close to average with some good mountain snow thru the mid range, and it’s pretty active with a ton of valley rain. If it was dry and chilly you’d just be bitching about that instead. 😂

This winter is over. Might as well not even look at the models. Nothing but endless torching and rain.

I can't wait to see flowers start popping up again soon!

To be perfectly honest I am looking forward to the brighter days in April/May and enjoying a beer or glass of wine on the balcony. :D

Dry and chilly >>>>>>> warm rain. No question.

Last time I checked 2002-03 and 2014-15 were pretty active.

Most of the warm rain is at the end of the run. Seems like that period has been pretty variable lately.

Dont fret and just try to enjoy the ride. You’ll be getting to enjoy REAL winters in Siskiyou county soon enough I’m sure. ;)

Some early season bulbs poking up at the property I’m working today. Spring and those higher sun angles aren’t far off now.

I mean, next year I could be going to MSU. I’m sure Bozeman qualifies as having real winters.

Siskiyou Co isn’t Montana or Wyoming by any means but certainly beats out anywhere in the western OR and WA lowlands in winter. Pretty obviously at that considering it’s a mountain area and the I-5 corridor there gets fairly easy cold air drainage from the eastside through the Klamath River canyon and the fairly porous Cascades.

I wrote up a really long post about the climate of this area on one of your threads and you never even responded 😢

I don’t think people are freaking out at all, just discussing the models which show nothing of interest in the near term.

I like him just fine too. Smart and has a lot of knowledge/interest in climate for being so young. Seems like it’s rare to see him ever be happy about any weather event though. It’s a bad, weenie-esque mindset I know all too well, so I give him a hard time about it.

It’s often with a smile on my face, but I could tone it down if everyone finds it to be unbearably offensive.
