PNW February 2022 - Winters Last Stand

The Blob

Recommended Posts

Has rained really hard the last couple hours. 2.90” right now. Since 2005 we’ve only had 2 days exceed 3” of rainfall. 3.33” on 11/6/06 and 3.33” on 1/7/09. Will see how close we can get to those before midnight but wow really impressive amount of rain in the last ~30 hours.

Rain rate at .17 under this heavy band….strange, earlier it was a dark green band and I was getting .35 🤷

It’s just been consistent moderate rain all day…but it’s been pretty heavy this evening. 3” in one day is pretty big time.

Seattle just needs .3 more inches for the record of wettest day in February. Will it make it? Possible...

Not only that, they have a shot at top 5 wettest days ever.

The 1985 analog is not looking too good... even though I would enjoy a repeat.

SEA already has more rain this year than the total precip from January through September in 1985.    In other words... it took until September that year to get as much rain as we have had through February 28th this year.  That was a crazy dry year.    I wonder what caused that?

Intense and prolonged mid-latitude blocking for one. January and December were two of the longest lived intense blocking patterns on record in North America, in two of our wettest months.

And as you often like to point out, the sense of "dueness" was there as well. 1982-84 were very, very wet years across much of the West, driven by the big El Nino and then the sharp cooling response with the Nina and volcanic influence. Some balancing was inevitable.

3.02 for the day and rain rate .16 currently

3.08” here. Just need a quarter of an inch of rain to be the wettest day in almost 19 years.

Rain rate dropped to 0.00 😱

If anything it was just a constant downpour all day like you said….3 inches quite respectable

Radar isn’t quite as healthy but it’s very possible we get 0.25” or more before midnight.

LMAO nice series of GIFs.... Yeah crazy 00z GFS run. Unreal IF it verifies, and it probably will since it will be March lol Following very mild rains with the AR. Seems legit. It couldn't happen 1-2 months ago, so why not in March haha.... Most likely would be any snow occurring 7 PM - 9 AM with the sun angle working against us later into the morning.

SEA’s only ever had 7 days worth over 3” of rain and it looks like they’re at 2.87” now. Good chance they get there.

Pretty crazy.     This event did not look like it was that big of a deal a few days ago... but ended up being just about the wettest February day in history at SEA and OLM.

And one of the wettest days ever recorded.

A ridiculous 3.14" for today and still raining. 4.66" for the storm so far.  Between this and the SSW in progress I think we should be ready for a major (for March) cold wave coming up.
