Pretty impressive that PDX has now beaten their pre-2017 monthly warm September MIN of 64 twice this month. Doesn’t even seem like that remarkable of a pattern.

A new record warm September MIN of 66 was set on a few days the first week of the month in 2017, but that was mostly due to a trapped, humid, low level smoke bath.

Day 2 Convective Outlook on SPC for 09/05/2019.

Also a coincidence on that same day in 2013 there was a decent outbreak of storms in the PNW.

This month so far has reminded me of September 2013.

That was an interesting month. Had 5.95” of rainfall here, and we also hit 90 degrees 9/11 which is rare for Tacoma that late in the year. In 2013, September was also the wettest month of the year.

May 2013 also had a pretty decent rain event.

Other than that, a very dry year that got drier the farther south you went. It was the year responsible for kickstarting the CA drought and was the driest year on record at many CA locations if I’m not mistaken.

That December was crazy dry. A record up here with just 1.23” of precip.

May 2013 featured a very impressive 5-6 day in a row stretch of pretty wet thunderstorms in southern OR. I had two afternoons in a row of minor downtown flooding on the 7th and 8th that May. While nothing severe in my area, one of the storms got close. Recorded thunder on the 5th-6th-7th-8th-9th. Third longest stretch of storms I think in this area over decades of t'storm activity.

A few of the underpasses had water high enough a vehicle would just get stuck in. At KLMT 2013 was supposedly the driest overall year but clearly the airport here missed the bulk of some of the storm events. I can pull up quite a few examples of spotters reporting 1+ inch in an hour, and there might only be a tenth of that at KLMT.

A winter like that of 13’-14’ would be greatly appreciated. We tied the all time record low of -28 twice in Redmond. Once in December and the other in February. Decent snows as well that seemed to stick around all winter long. The February 8 snowfall we got 36” in 3 days. 6 days after the Hawks won the super bowl and one month before my daughter was born. Great winter all around.

I remember lots of sunny days here that winter... but very little snow.

March of 2014 was very wet though... that is when the Oso landslide happened.    That was the wettest March in history at SEA.

We got some snow in December and February not a ton though only 2” in December and 3” in February. The main thing that was impressive was the cold outbreaks. We had 5 days in a row sub freezing in December, and 2 more in February.

I went most of that winter with a bare ground. If it wasn't for the arctic blasts and the PDX Metro snowstorm in Feb '14, nobody would have remembered '13-'14 season for much. Some of my folks from back in Hillsboro/Beaverton had a higher snow depth than a lot of east side locations. Your area in central OR probably had a few exceptions to go around that winter.

Winter 2013 was pretty interesting. Absolutely no action outside of the December and February arctic blasts, but they were definitely ones for the ages for Oregon.

I hiked up Table Rock on January 5, 2014, the summit is over 4800' and there was almost no snow on the top.

2014 and 2015 were the only two New Years in quite some time here that was snowless. Locals thought winter was doomed, until the last few happened.

He makes a good point here.

Ryan Maue @RyanMaue

The U.S. Navy used to fly into Western Pacific Typhoons -- the strongest storms on the planet from the 1940s until 1987. In the past > 30-years, except for research missions, we have relied upon satellites for intensity & structure of Typhoons.

Hurricane hunters in the Western Pacific would be an economical way to improve weather forecasts -- especially when compared to launching billion $ satellites. Better analysis of Typhoons --> Better Forecasts --> and 5-7 days later, the U.S. benefits from those observations.

13-14 repeat would be great. S valley got the nice early Dec event with 5-7" of snow around Eugene/Springfield and temps getting to -10F tying the all-time record low.  Then the great early Feb instance with a cross-cascade mountain wave event and lots of snow.  Was a Willamette Valley Special for sure.
